You raise a valid issue. Here's a story that illustrates your point:
I know a Thai lady (works in the Bus Stop, BTW) whose mom really was having heart problems and needed an operation (bypass or something). She knew a farang who had promised her if ever she needed money, just ask. Well, she never asked, until finally this came up. The operation was, I believe, 40K or 50K Baht, and she didn't have it. Her mom would probably die without it.
So she asked the farang to help her, 20K or 30K Baht and she would do the rest. He refused, saying she was just trying to cheat him. So they postponed the operation as long as possible, she squeaked together most of the cash, and her mom survived (her dad died years ago).
But now she thinks farangs are basically bullshitters, and doesn't believe any of the promises.

In addition to PR's earlier points, I have to say I also have a bit of a problem with the way guys will voluntarily allow the relationship to become all about money and use their money to attempt to further the relationship, rather than the actual hard work of being with the person and getting to know them. yes, some guys don't have the option -- they must live somewhere else and can't come often. To those guys I would suggest that they shouldn't get involved with someone they can't spend time with, and if they do, don'yt make the mistake of thinking money will make it all work.
Nonetheless, I have to say that though I have felt almost precisely as PR expressed so well, for the last decade and a half, in fact Chompoo is right.

Some have decent English (especially those with falang 'tours of duty') and some have none whatsoever. In fact, many that I come across are only semi-literate in Thai..... not to mention English.
I think it takes a good actress to fake that she has a hard time understanding things written on the TV screen. It's one of the good points I look for when I am trying to determine 'relative freshness.'

These girls sometimes pay the internet worker to help them write their emails, it costs anywhere from 100-300 bht for this service and most shops provide this service. I get super long emails from a girl that I know she didnt write herself. She told me she pays someone to help her write it so she can express what she wants to write to me. Sounds fair enough to me and she talks about enough personal stuff that I can tell is not cut and paste.
However, I have gotten emails from others in the past that reminded me of the good times we had (at places we never went) and of songs (that I had never heard) and of things she told me and I told her (that we never did). Now, those were some cut and paste jobs.
Its just the slick english assistor that is helping your honey you have to watch out for now
