Cafe, humans were really not predators; we were predated. This doesn't mean we were not carnivores. Yes, we were carnivores. But not predators. We really were scavengers.
Once dislodged from the trees, slow-moving, unarmoured, and untooled early humanoids were easy meat for more or less any large or medium sized predator around - lions, tigers, leopards, wolves, hyenas, and any number of others. This intense predation almost completely defined human life for several million years.
Our molars ressemble most those of hervibores than those of carnivores. Not becuase we didn't like meat. Meat was (is) a very efficient source of nourrishment, but the proportion of meat we got was little because we either got late to the kill and only scavanged what the real predators had left, or had often the kill taken away from us.
So what happened? Why did we change? Well, almost decimated by predators... the trick became to become more efficient at reproducing.
If humans today are unusually highly sexed (by animal standards) it may simply be because for many thousands of years, even millions of years, human society was geared to maximum f_cking.. sorry, reproduction. And it was so geared because humans were under intense predator pressure. see? It all has to do with sex. Always sex.
Later on, we managed to form teams that allowed to defend human localities from predators who were puruing and eating our babies. These same tools now allowed us to go hunt. Now we are satrting to really talk about eating meat. But these lates developments happened about 50k years ago -which is nothing in evolution time, like a blink of the eye. Our teeth have a long way to go before becoming comparable to those of predators. But this is a whole different topic.
Anyway, nothing like a good "bife de chorizo" or "vacio" (oh, those Argentinian cuts! yummy)

An interesting perspective in today's news that is in contradiction to your assertion:

Obviously man evolved into a hunter. So your statement must refer to early forms of man being a scavenger; yet our close cousins (the modern version of our early forms) would appear to also be hunters.

TJ, I do not see how that article contradicts my assertion. After reading the article, I actually think that it supports it. I also agree with the article. They are however, not exactly addressing the same identical thing. But certainly, to me the post and the article do not seem to contradict each other. There are lots of questions asked at the end there, but they do not try to answer them. But maybe I am missing something.
Anyway, the article says: "Primitive stone tools that were made 2.5 million years ago suggest that early hominids had the means to carve the flesh from large carcasses, but we know very little about their diets before that time. Were they hunters or perhaps, as many anthropologists now argue, scavengers"
We all agree that humans have eaten meat for a very long time. The discussion is on when we moved from being scavengers and became hunters -ie us killing and managing to keep the killed game -as opposed to having other predators take it from us. The fact that we had tools to carve meat is not conclusive as to when we got to the kill -early as hunters or late as scavengers. Those were tools to rip flesh from the carcass -because evolution didn't give us the proper teeth, as opposed to hunting tools.
Interestingly, the article you mention talks about the role of meat and sex among the chimpazees. Chimps have also the same problem humans had in terms of low fertility (in timing and survival terms).
I said in my previous post (I am not sure you read it all) that the timing of when we became really hunters and thus real carnivores as opposed to casual scavengers was about 50k years ago -again just a blink of the eye in terms of evolution.
Most of the evidence so far seems to support the 50k years timing.

You're right Smegs that we were more scavengers, eating ants out of ant hills is far more efficient and less deadly than hunting and we are truly omnivours. But for some people to say that vegan is the only way is ludacris, we couldn't support the size of our brains without meat during our evolution.
It's not about sex, Smegs (hehe rhymes), it is about BABIES.  Cute, stinky, filthy little babies. Ah, I wonder how Tiger manages near kids. They are naturally dirty. 
P.S. - Sure loved the meat promo. Ummm, mmm good, or is it? I'm lovin it.

My point in responding to your post with this article really does depend on the assumption that chimpanzees are a reasonably accurate representation of what humans were like in their early stages. Granted, this is not necessarily true. But my understanding was that they were/are our closest cousins.

It does say that. And that's one vague scavenger reference in an article full of direct references to the groups of chimps killing off other monkeys for food. Not collecting corpses killed by others, but killing them first hand.
Of course that's a reference to humans, and my references are to chimps. As you say: "There are lots of questions asked at the end there, but they do not try to answer them." And it is the premise of some of those questions that I was using as my underlying assumption.
I'll pull a thai-ism for that: Mai pen rai.

I am a Thai BG new to the business and I have a few questions. By reading these threads, I see that many punters will take a shower before sex, but do they really clean themselves up to our standards? Because they are bigger than Thai's (especially those from midwest USA), they have more body mass and thus take longer to clean themselves. Will they take the time to do this? I am more or less a bonified clean freak and take two to three showers daily.
I understand punters eat some weird sh_it. Some of the vegetables they eat are not even heard of here, and don't get me started on someone who would put a greasy piece of meat wrapped in a bun made of white bread in their mouth. This is sick. I wouldn't want to do French after they chomped down on McDonalds, KFC, a veggie-burger or some other f_ucked-up food.
Do many farangs want to stick their tongue down our throats, even though this is not a very accepted practice, traditionally? My BG friends tell me they like to do this without first brushing their teeth. This is f_ucked-up, is it true?
Finally, why do you guys fall in love with us?
I would appreciate any thoughts you guys have on this subject.

How much long time cg?......tiger, power to you my man, and just a couple of questionS? I firstly am sorry (sincerly) about the pain endured in a loss, that you discribed. And Los is a better place than perhasp where your at, to rebuild hopes, and heart, small adventures and large. That entails (sometimes a mix of joy, and/or pain heartbreak too) This forum, collectively offers you hundreds of years experience into what might /could happen, but only you must discover the path. One gentle observation, when in an elvated state of consciousness, that your new found lifestyle has produced in you, dont you for a second consider it unusual to call a seafood food product, consumed by hundreds of millions, weird? I mean I reserve judgment on vegans, they are just persons that abstain for whatever reasons, on certain products dairy, flesh etc. But is it not unusual, (maybe weird) to do so. % wise the squid folk out number you, 1000 fold in any continent. But the ease, with which, the premise (eating werid sh_t) went to conclusion, that they may not be clean. Lets for a moment, discusss the biology of persons eating meat, squid or otherwise, even milk products. The human body is clearly able to digest these substances. And with some reservation, meat eating my benifit woman, at least in iron, as milk in infants. And squid in asian, and ordinary persons, if just for the nourishment or enjoyment value. Food and lifestyle, is not an issue so much here, as is the concept, that another is weird, by eating things, therefore unclean?....An interseting research study, showed cervical cancer, was higher in non meat eating woman,. But also concluded that bowel cancer was less. So gee we could go on all day. Or take a holiday from it, in your case august, mine a week. I respect in closing what cultures eat, and religions they practise. The impression is my friend that is something you as a vegan, may have trouble doing it appears.
