Quote: from manowar on 1:16 am on Mar. 25, 2005 Hugh, sorry to burst another bubble. But Chinese food in London are craps ( mostly). I have been to London's Chinatown and yes, the best you guys have over there will rate about a 6 or 7 compared to what they have in HK or Taiwan. Do you know most Chinese restaurants oversea were not started by professionally trained chefs ? But started by men ( or women) who migrated to those countries, did not have skills or language to make a living, rent a cheap spot, whip up some food that they eat at home ( or enlist the help of grandma), and they call it a "restaurant". It's only in the last 10-15 years that real good HK restauranters had ventured out of HK to open restaurants in US or UK. But because lack of competitions ( of the finest cuisine), once they open overseas, inadvariably the quality goes down. Simple question. Are most Italian or French restaurants in London as good or better than their native countries ? Yes, there is always exception of maybe a few that are quite ok, but if you want the best Italian or French food, you don't go to New York or London, you go to Italy or France. Same applies to Asian foods in UK or US. So what's my point ? American's best food cannot be found in Thailand. That's why you get Mac's and BK's and KFC's and when is Taco Bell coming to BKK? ( or is it already there ? )
No manowar as per usual you are wide of the mark. So you've been to china town and you now qualified to comment on the chinese cuisine in the UK. Well great stuff. Please tell us how many you went too 1? 5? 10? 50? all of them? The thing is China Town is a bit of a theme park most of the restaurants there are just catering for the tourists from the famous wonkeys which is supposed to give the rudest service possible (it's quite rude but the food is very average) to your crispy duck restaurants that serve beer in Kettles after their licensing hours. It wouldn't surprise me at all if you were to go to China town and have a very average meal, it's like many other China towns around the world in that respect. There are however some fantastic restaurants in london's china town but you have to know the one's to choose, for example the Joy king Low. The most upmarket chinese restaurants in London (I know you like that word) are certainly not in Chinatown if you want to try some of these they include Kai and Hakkasan in mayfair and Mr Chow's in knightsbridge. As for French cooking well many would argue with you on that as well. For example the top 50 restaurants in the world poll rate the best french restaurant in the world outside france, actually in california. I appreciate that this is only a poll and only worth the paper it is written on but never the less. You see the thing about French cooking outside of France is that has been allowed to florish and develop away from the more stringent traditions in France. Basically some would argue that there in no longer enough creativity in French indigious cooking whereas outside of the country is is allowed to take on more experimentation and influences, which has spurned the term modern european cuisine.
and how many Chinese restaurants have you been to in HK and Taiwan ? 5, 10, 15 ? Ask any Chinese ( no, no not the 2nd generation Chinese, the older and wiser ones.....555) in London if the Chinese food is better in London than Hong Kong or Taiwan. You are exactly right, you do not know where to go in Hong Kong and Taiwan for the top notch Chinese food. And yes, the "French" food in California is world class, except it really is not totally "French" anymore, it's Nouveau Cuisine or " California-French" if you like. My whole point is that when you go to BKK, why would you expect great American ( or any other western ) food ? If you can get a 6-7 rating American food in BKK, I think you are damn lucky. Do not think Alice Water or Thomas Keller are thinking about opening a restaurant in BKK anytime soon. As a side note, Chinese restaurants in BKK are quite crappy as well. Go to Thai restaurants in BKK and you will be happy. And if you are tired of Thai food, go to any other cuisines in BKK, but don't be too picky if it's just so so, it's that simple ! A little like someone on this board trying to find Russian stunners in BKK. Yeah, good luck !

Thats missing my point. I'm not trying to sayLondon has better chinese food than hong kong, I don't know if it has, but neither do you because you haven't tried London's best. But I can say you can get far better quality chinese in the UK compared to most of the restaurants in London's chinatown As for asking a chinese that question I would first have to make sure they had tasted the best both places had to offer, simply being an old and wise chinese doesn't qualify them to make a call. People thinking they know is what f***s the world. As for french cuisne outside france not really being french anymore as it develops well yes if it's put like that then how can you deny it. Trouble is it's a bad mentality to have. As far as I am concerned if chefs are pushing their boundaries and developing and creating it's great for food lovers, so if it's not traditionally french who cares, as long as it's better. anyway this has gone off at a tangent, suffice to say I can't believe anyone thinks that KFC, MCdonalds etc is anywhere close to the best the US has to offer, some people just can't resist a little dig. I've always found food in the US on average to be of good quality and value. Something that the UK is still struggling with.

it does not take a rocket scientist to know that ethnic food in its own home country has got to be better than when it is exported. But if you want to believe that London has better Chinese food than Hong Kong and Taiwan, then I have some real good Fish and Chip place in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf area that I am sure you will find the best in the world..........55555. BTW, I have eaten Chinese food ( a dim sum place near the Hyde Park area, supposedly one of the best in London) outside of London's Chinatown. I can tell you no Hong Kong Chinese will give that place higher than a 7. I was taken there by a Chinese lady from Hong Kong married to a Brit and have lived in London for about 30 years. Case closed.

I think everyone can agree that the word you're looking for is 'different' -- ethnic food abroad and outside it's own habitat will be different, than indigenous variety. Dr. von Quack!

WTF is with all the drama over taking a BG to a nice place ? you would expect mixed reponses/reactions either A - you don't give a shit what others think or B - you don't take the BG there if you live here, you might think twice about it, unless this BG is particularly non-P4P looking/acting IMHO you should save the fancy restaurants for non-P4P gals the P4P variety would rather have the money in their pocket than on a plate

Quote: from Mark Pressure on 3:05 am on Mar. 25, 2005 I have friends that love Jagermeister. I laugh because I read somewhere that it was created in Europe during the depression as a rot-gut drink to keep you warm since you didn't have money to heat the house. Bottom line "Rot gut"
I was being kind when I called it 'digestive aid' - rot gut appears more authentic. It's amazing what people will drink, if properly marketed to them, eh? Dr. von Quack!
