Afterall you have been in Asia for some time and this particular type nationalistic racism is hardly unique in this part of the world.
As always, everything I wrote is just my opinion – based on my experience. Nonetheless, my statements DO harbor the sentiments I feel towards Thai people. Obviously, individuals are just that, individuals - determined by their culture and social situation, but *generally* speaking, that is the feeling I get for/from Thais. And the bar/disco scene only contributes a small part to that opinion, as I realize that this is just a (opinion-deforming) fraction of society. I work in a Thai company run by Thai people for Thai people. Its not like my contact is excluded to the scrotum of society. Understanding what people do and why they do it (as an individual and a group), is what I went to school for and Thailand is a very interesting case study indeed.
Firstly show me a country that is not nationalistic and does not contain some level of racism within it's population.
Some level, yes. But to a level of Thailand, you will have to head to the Middle East or the (post9/11) US to find something similar. Even the people of the biggest Muslim country in the world (Indonesia) I find much more agreeable and sensible then the Thais.
PS That girl from Dollhouse really burned you man.
What the hell are you dragging up? She has nothing to do with my opinion concerning this. Although she is a good illustration of thereof.
I would suggest some study of eastern philosophy is in order to better understand the antecendents that lead to nationlism in Thailand and to not throw such statements around in a cavalier attitude.
I am always eager to learn and understand the human psyche, and I will indeed follow up on that suggestion.
(Does this mean however that my studying the Koran, I will understand the insurgents in Iraq?)

No worries Hypo I'm only ribbing you about the bint from Dollhouse or wherever the fcuk it was.
However you do bring up a number of interesting points (at least to me) and i'm certainly not denying racism in thailand but you don't have to go back too far in european history to find us all indiscrminately slaghtering the less technologically developed races. Perhaps are moral have now developed to another level and not so in Asia but we have had a significant head start in developmental terms
As for Indonesia this is a good example actually because although Indonesia is a nation it lacks a strong identity, it is very young country and it covers such a large area (broken into thousands of island which obviously form natural barriers) with great ethnic and group diversity in it's people. The number of languages spoken in indinesia is also in the hundreds. Yes they have a national language - Bahasa Indonesian and this to some extent gives some national identity but it is generally spoken poorly by most. Yes It has the highest number of muslims in the world but again the factions and groups within islam here do not provide for an overall identity and the majority of muslims in Indonesia are moderates. Even at the higher end of society there is division with the richest merchant classes being made up of Chinese whilst the political classes being dominated by javanese.
There is much less watering down of thai society or a far greater sense of unity the chinese are the richest and political ruling classes and thai language a member of the thai-kadar family it a member of the chinese language family it is this chinese cultture or neo confusianism that gives thailand it "xenophobia" and nationalism. Certainly this culture was exported to Indonesia with immigrants but to a lesser extent and it is also watered down by the other factors
Also studying the Koran to understand the mentality of insurgents is an excellent example in my opinion. The Koran is the word of god, muslim means subserviant one. it basically leads to a religion in which superiors must be obeyed without question. Now with regard to fighting the Quaran says it is allowed but only to achieve certain objectives, not to compel unbelieveers to islam but to establish religious freedom, to stop all religious persecution, to protect the houses of worship of all religions (as muslims have respect for all religions the worship the one true god), mosques among them.
Now this is interpreted by insurgents one way and by other muslims another way, obvioulsy by reading the specific passages of the quran that relate to this you can gain an understanding of how they inteprete and of why they fight and kill, you probably will not agree and think they are f***ing idiot murderous bastards but at least understand the mentality. It also gives an appreciation that only the educated people in islamic society can undertand the classical arabic used and from that you can understand that most of the footsoldiers involved in insurgency do not really properly understand what they do but are manipulated by those in power.
Obvioulsly that is the danger with culture, religion, nationaism that utilises ultimate submision it can and will be abused, not always but at some point.

I can say I have never been lied to by a BG.

How do I know that, you will want to know. Well simple.
It is not BG's lieing to US. It is US lieing to US. They just hold a mirror to our face and kick our words right back in our face.
It is US that ask stupid questions. I don't ask questions that a BG may have some need to lie for. I also don't tell them porkies. And of the questions that I do ask, she can answer what ever she wants, it is of no importance. Does my wolrd stop turning if I know for real why she was an half hour late. So the bridge was open. Do I care if it was her girl/boy friend that made her late? I think not.
I leave my longtime LT's with the message that I will be back, don't know where, don't know when. And that is true. And I say to them find a nice man to marry and lead a happy life.
When I get back and if I can find her then I will take it from there to see what my possibilities are.
Tell them the truth and don't ask question that you know are dangerous for her losing face, and you have cut down 90% of the lies. That leaves you with the white lies, but who cares.
On my last trip I had 2 girls at the same time in BKK. A nighttime and a daytime girl. Both sort of freebees. My nighttime girl was a masseuse, from 13.00 till 24.00 she worked during the day and I f***ed her during the night. My daytime girl knew of my nighttime girl and was a ONE GIRL - ONE MAN type, absolutly no BG. So no sex. No problem. We had a great time. And round 23.30 she says in the disco that I should stay longer. I said : "No, GF is coming to my room" and I leave. She now knows I'm trustworthy and not a cheating bastard. GF comes to my room and I don't ask what bodyparts went thru her hands, and she does not ask what I have been up to all day.
Everybody is happy, nobody is lied to. Both cry when I leave, but the tears were sincere.
It could be that I have been blessed with many down to earth girls that knew what way was up. But my guess is that it is US that should look in the mirror and ask ourself if we WANT to be lied to. If not maybe WE should change our attitude a bit. Maybe the BG's would then see no need in lieing.
And that brings me to surprises. Don't! You will hurt a nice relationship. Do what you say you will do. Maybe she will return the favour by doing what she promisses. If not; so what? Is she your personal slave??? You f*** her for one week per year. Does that a marriage make??? (That was Shakespearian talk, not Dirty Gurian)

You are correct in assuming this. Whether these feelings are correct or not is irrelevant, as they are purely my subjective sentiments.
Then again I feel “abject disdain” for almost every human soul on the face of this earth.

Oh come on! It’s neither one nor the other that is the main reason of their behavior, but a combination of a lot of factors. You can’t ignore that national pride and disdain for farangs are amongst those factors. Granted, if you see most farangs in Bangkok, I would dislike white people as well.
