OK Guys I am not a newbie but not sure how to handle this situation....
I get a call from a girl I have not seen (in the physical share a bed way) for 4 years.. I bumped into her about 2 months back and said our hello's but nothing more.. but did swop numbers for old times sake..
I am in England now and I get a call from her.. she is very ill in hospital with an acute appendicitis she did not know what to call it she just told me OH!! I very hurt inside (you can imagine what thoughts were going through my head when she said this).
She tells me she is hospital and she had to have an operation.. she puts me on to the doctor who explains that the appendics could have ruptured if she wasnt treated quickly. So the girl tells me she has had to borrow 20,000 baht from a loan shark and she needs to pay him back. Can I lend her the money.
Now is it just because of how long I have been going to LOS and of the tales I have heard that I I am worried.. I have to be honest if it is a scam then it is good the women who was the doctor explained everything in a technical way as a doctor would. What would you guys do.. the other reason I am a bit wary is that our relationship ended because she started to get more and more demanding with money!!!
Thats the problem guys give even an old hand some advise.. part of me says 20,000 baht in the whole scheme of things aint much... another part says her bloody sister owns a bar so why cant she pay the money..

Tough question. Try asking yourself this:
1. Can I afford it? If the answer is no then you tell her no.
2. Do you have a budget for charity and does this amount fit into the budget? Here if the answer is no, then where in your budget can you afford to take the money. If it cannot fit anywhere in your budget then re-ask yourself question 1.
3. If it fits in your budget are you prepared to grant her request for charity instead of some other charity (i.e. the Red Cross/Crescent).
If the answer to question 3 is yes, then give her the money as charity and do not expect it to be paid back BUT explain to her that it is charity and she is obliged by dharma to pay this sum back to someone who is in true need. Sorta like the 'Pay it Forward' programs that swept the USA a few years ago.
If she does not pay it back (as charity), oh well, her dharma...

P.S, How well did the doctor explain the situation? Like being read from a text book / internet page? Was there go-go or beer bar noises in the background?
How is the health of her mother's buffalo's ?
It's hard not to be suspicious after spending time with Thai's.

Personally I'd say that it is a scam - huge coincidence after just meeting you again - but it is a quality one - biggest load of BS I have heard in years - and maybe that deserves something. Even if it is a genuine operation the outcome is the same. It all depends on what you want out of this.
I'd give her the money if as Mel says I got to bounce up and down on that scar in due course - and that was what I wanted. If not, then don't send her a cent (a penny?)
You won't see the money again - not as cash. Ever.
You are simply the path of least resistance and least obligation - the bar owning sister will want cash back...so will others who could lend her the money...you are her first point of call because you are (again?) her easiest source of credit.

Just my thoughts.
I realize Thailand may not have a health service like the UK but do they not still treat emergency cases without fee?
If this is the case and you get free emergency treatment then tell her to hold off until her appendices rupture. Once this happens most people would be dead within 4 hours so it is then indeed an emergency.
If on the other hand Thailand does not offer free emergency care then I guess the choice is yours weather you do or do not send the money.

Lofty one BTF member even had a TG get a fake incision and stiches to fake an appendics operation that did not happen. Do not under estimate the creativity of the way that these girls can extract money.
It sounds like you have no relationship. Unless you can be in BKK and escort her to the hospital or see an actual receipt it is most likely a sham.
This is what family is for and if is indeed a real operation the sister should come through.
Send a message expressing your concern, wish her well and suggest that her sister help her in her time of need.
