So ppl from the south dunno abt dowry, ok.... anyway as i said my gf's from bkk...middleclass ++, and she tell's me that it's the way to do it...too, maybe she just dont know what the norm is..eheh, i think we can conclude that (which i try to point out in my first post here) that no matter how it's done, there will be a dowry in the majority of cases.... hey but feel free to marry a tg or bg,
iŽll put 10 k on the fact that u'll end up poorer...moneywise.

right on...don't even have to be married to be poor, when you are with a girl...its always seems like they are the ones who can buy stuffs, their 'accessories' but not us...we have to refrain from getting our 'toys'. probably the most previllage we would be able to do is switch the channel on the tv!
to them a color has many definitions...for them red is maroon, vermillion, burgandy and so on...he he he!

On this dowry issue. You should NOT expect much if any to be handed back to you. So ... when negotiating the amount, keep that in mind. If they decide to hand a lot back to you, then count that as a bonus.
Dowry's tend to be the "older generation" asians that still keep that tradition. Let me expand on that statement. The newer generation might practice as a tradition, and so the amounts given are very small.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the man is exspected to pay for the wedding, honeymoon and have a place for he and the wife to be to live, on top of the dowery. Again, this is the old traditions.
If you want to follow the traditions to the letter, I believe that in Chinese culture, the grooms side must give the brides side something like 12 gifts, including money and jewlery. They do not get any of this back. This does not include the dowery.
So ... if the family is asking for a dowry, then just compromise on an amount. But ... don't assume that they will return the money to you.

yeah your right I guess, it was best to walk away, but I still think I would have felt better by kicking something.
as far as dowry, goes the second one I was with asked 200,000bht, and the fact was she had another on the side. I think that is enough for me, from now on playing the field.

I have a good way to avoid this dowry situation.
Never get married.
Keep the girls as girlfriends til their shelf life expires (usually 6 to 12 months) and do what any good environmentalist would do, recycle.
BTW When i got divorced it cost me around 400,000 US dollars in settlement costs and that is not to mention the money spent over the years together.

It started in my eyes, but by half of page four it was in my head. So this reply will suck do to migrain.
