In the west, it's just the contrary. The bride's side has to provide for the cost of the wedding. It's like the bride's family has to pay the groom' side to take their daughters ! Which is more civilized ?

I don't know, seems to make more sense...

...You are getting a "person"....

There you have it folks. In 5 words Manowar has explained it perfectly. That is exactly how it is in the minds of the family and the girl...she becomes yours.

Enjoy.

from the East : You get my daughter ( who cost me a lot to raise), you pay.
from the West : You get my daughter ( who WILL cost me a lot if you don't take her), I'll pay.

It's that simple........55555

Golly Gee Willikers. In India it's the BRIDE'S family that has to pay dowry.

Or would that be a new thread?

It is my understanding that in Thai tradition the daughters inherit the farm/business and land from the parents. Therefore the groom is essentially buying not so much t he person but rather buying into the family and in essence all that the daughter should one day inherit.

That sounds fine but what if you are a Falang that has no interest in a little rice farm?? I guess then under those circumstances it is understood that you will be taking their daughter (AKA Income producer) away from them.

Still you must pay a dowry of sorts.....seems like a counter productive requirement since you the Falang WILL become the bigger and better income producer for the family anyway. They should pay us to take their daughter since we will be obligated to support them afterwards.

In the end I think it is simply poor people grabbin whatever money they can convince people should be paid. If the family is not so poor it is my understanding that the dowry is more a face saving item....the more he pays the more he lubs and the more face the daughter and by extension the family have. Parents that are not poor give the money back to the couple as a gift....but if I were marrying a Thai I would never assume that would actually happen.

I guess the same concept applies in the West, with money grubbing grooms trying to get away with wahtever expensive wedding they can get away with... oh, wait...

You're talking about traditions, in both cultures, that make very little sense in today's world, but that invariably are being followed. You might not be aware that it's also often understood that whatever dowry money the groom pays the parents, is being returned to the married kids so they may build or buy a house -- in that respect, it's simply an assurance from the parent's side, that the groom is able to take care of their little girl... or something to that effect.

I thought the youngest one got it.
One TG told me the youngest one is the last to leave home and has to take responsibility for looking after parents when they are old and sick, therefore youngest gets the house etc.

No, traditionally in Asian society the eldest son inherits the most, if not all of it. The youngest gets stuck taking care of the parents because he has no choice - his older brother is going to own the family land.

As for dowrys, it's a function of social class. Between families of equal status, money goes from girl's family to the guy's. The husband is responsible for taking care of their daughter, so he gets the $$.

In the case of a richer man marrying a woman from a poorer family, his status doesn't permit him to accept a gift from a lower-class family except perhaps as a token. If there is a token dowry, it's usually exceede by a gift to the bride's parents.

So the dowry money a farang pays falls into this model. The foreign man is presumably better off and thus responsible for showing his generosity.

As mentioned before, a "good" family would promptly return that money to the girl. Since we are talking about bargirls and their families, is it really surprising that so few of these parents fall under the "good" classification?

How do you know that so 'few' fall under these categories of not returning the monies? As it stands, we only hear of the bad ones, but never (or rather, hardly ever) of the good ones - there's probably more cases of 'good situations' than bad ones in LOS, overall.
