have tasted the different foods in the different regions of china.
but it always came down to the point that the restaurant and the quality of food was best in hong kong.
usually the big hotels had the best chinese chefs.
also I meant hunan food, not yunnan.
also there are great places for dim sum and yam chaa.
and yes I have brought many girls to such restaurants or the restaurants were introduced to me by girls.
and they were usually more comfortable then me, but that was just in the early days.
after that I knew how and what to order.
so my point is, bring a girl to a thai restaurant, leave her in charge of ordering the dishes and she will be comfy.

Thanks for acknowledging that a well travelled American friend of yours might well be able to pass reasonable judgement on the quality of a plate of fish and chips, in much the same way that both BL and me are eminently able to pass valid comment on the quality of the burgers in America. Having been to Thailand, we are both qualified to judge Thai food in England, or indeed Thai girls. But as you say, one man's meat is another man's poisson (sic).
As Daffy points out, this is all subjective, but it seems that BL and me are a bit more subjective than you.

rtb, it's great that you ask the locals to learn about their food which is partly their culture. It shows your respect for them and your effort to try to understand them. It's also great that now you are beginning to differentiate the differences among all these various provincial diveristy of the "umbrellaed" Chinese cuisine. As you have already found out, Chinese food is the most diverse and Hong Kong has the best Cantonese food in the world. Just the variety of it and the sheer number and competition among all those restaurants make it quite indisputable. ( except to BL and HJ who know close to nothing about Chinese food, but is quite good in going to "Google" 55555555). Even though I maybe "well traveled", but I don't pretend to know French food as much as the French or German food as much as the German or English food ( is there English food or is it English fool ?). But Chinese food, ask me first before you ask BL or HJ. I am darn sure they are good and quick to tell you which pub has the best Fish and Chip in London, though....... 55555555

You really shouldn't cast aspertions about other's knowledge or expertise unless you are sure of your facts.
I have actually been to Hong Kong. I have also been to some of the World's largest Chinatowns or other large concentrations of Chinese, in Vancouver, Toronto, LA, Boston, Seattle, etc. I have been eating Chinese food in England since I was 6 and most of it has been in restaurants run by Hong Kong Chinese.
I have also visited and eaten the local cuisine of most European countries, particularly Italy and France. Having also visited all 6 states of New England, Florida (twice), Seattle, LA (Olympics) I am well enough qualified to pass judgement on burgers, as they are not a complicated food. I have eaten at all the chain burgers, McD's, BK's, Wendy's, Denny's etc, plus stuff from independent outlets like diners. However, I try and avoid eating junk food unless there is no other convenient alternative.
In England, I have dined at 1, 2 & 3 star Michelin Restaurants. You might know that the London Chinese restaurant mentioned in this thread (Hakkasan) has one Michelin star. So, Mr Clever clogs, presumably you'll now tell us that only a Chinese is qualified to pass judgement on Chinese food, eh? Perhaps you'll be emailing Michelin to give them your little treatise on this.
One of the foremost experts at rating restaurants over here is Egon Ronay. He happens to be Hungarian, so what does he know about anything? He should stick to commenting only on Hungarian Goulash, eh?
If you find it impossible to make that little leap of cognisance to accept that sometimes it is credible that a well travelled person who is a bon viveur, or a gourmand can sometimes make a better judgement than some local inhabitants, then I will be wasting my time trying to convince you further. Others have mentioned correctly that one's opinions on food, are subjective, but you are unable to be objective. One man's meat is another man's poisson (sic).

In 2 weeks I will take my tilac to the Oriental evening buffet - one of the best in LOS - and I do NOT think they will oppose to her presence. I often go out and eat in nice places with my TGF and never have a problem. Possibly because my ladies are not the type who eats bugs and if we go out to a really top place I ask her to dress conservative - no hot pants or "bar look".
Since staff quickly notices that I have the business man look and behaviour they never give any bad eye or shit attitude. On the contrary - have always been treated great at ALL places together with my lady of the evening!
Love to have a good relaxed dinner with a cutie, talking and relaxing and spoiling her. The rewards later are obvious! In my world this is how to do it. No ST for me - want a complete show!
