A couple of years ago I was in Chiang Mai and since I was at the time attempting to learn to speak Burmese (another failed undertaking) found a 20 ish Burmese girl who had slipped across the border two or three months earlier with her brother to find work.
She was working in a small drinks bar near the rock climb, not a beer bar, more a food and drink cafe. Her English was limited but very clear and correct as far as it went. We talked as she helped me run through a list of Burmese phrases I was trying to master (men-gla-bar etc).
On the one hand it was clear that the family in Burma was starving - or had been. Nothing special, it seems everybody in the village was doing it hard. Now that she and her brother had crossed over and found work the money was flowing home and Grandma may not die afterall cause there was now food in the house etc.
On the other hand she was not telling me this to elicit funds, this info was volunteered whilst explaining how wonderful life was for her now. She and her brother had been blessed with this chance to help the family - I forget her hours but they were long - and well, life was just great.
What was also clear was that she would be happy to short-time if I wanted it ( the true beer bars were on the other side of the alley - she knew how it worked).
Her self did not factor into the equation. To serve the family, to "repay" the debt that could never be repaid, to take care of her parents - that was all that was important. No sin, no shame, using the body that her parents had given her to help them - why not? Such simplicity - could you call this girl a "whore"? Sure it is all about $$$ but the motivations vary.
I tipped her a few hundred baht for helping me ( and that had her giggling with delight - the ease with which a month's wages in Burma could be had I suppose). I had previously thought I had grown up in poverty - once again I didn't have a clue.

Sorry, I am late in replying. Indians do smile. But it's the same as smiling readily when you are on holiday. And then in a foreign land, at foreigners is one thing, smiling at your own fellowmen as an everyday routine is another. And when it comes to smiling at women it's even more difficult. It's just not on. Your experience vis-a-vis mine is like me disagreeing with Readers Digest that calls Bangkok rude (29 in a list of 35) while many Thais say the Digest was correct.
Plenty of interesting points regarding your contention that you cannot discuss Voltaire or Mozart with TGs. But I think a lot of this discussion is centred round "getting away" from it all rather than remaining in our local environments. IMHO, when we cross cultural divides to reach out to people from another culture, we consciously take a decision to imbibe from the other. When men abandon their own moorings to reach out to women from another culture it's a conscious statement that they don't want to remain fettered in their own cultures. And they are willing to pay the price. That may not be understood by everyone.
Just as sex is not the greatest thing for some men, intellect is not the greatest thing either for others. We all have different objectives. As far as I am concerned if I cannot have an intellectual discussion with my wife I am quite happy to have it with whoever is capable. I don't allow intellectual difference to come in the way of our relationship. She has a hundred other virtues that I admire and like. On the other hand, she may find my constant indulgence in intellectual discussions a big bore so I better learn to vibe with her in order to keep her interested in me, for gawd's sake!!
As things pan out, though, there is a desert around me that extends far into my workplace and community too. So I find this forum a big refresher. I strongly suspect that many bros here are in the same boat, and find this a great intellectual release, or else why would smart and savvy men spend so much time and mental energy discussing diverse subjects here, most of which TGs and our own wives back home would find crappy and utterly wasteful. Conclusion: sauce for the gander is not necessarily sauce for the goose.
So while I respect your view that sex is not among the top 5 priorities in a marriage, it would be useful to remember that it is your own list of priorities, not an industry standard.
