Thai dance of naked hypocrisy for all the world to see
Published: 19/04/2011 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

I love Songkran in Bangkok. Always have and always will - except for the two previous holiday periods which were marred by protracted protests, smoke, fire, shooting that eventually led to the violence and tragic death of 91 people in May last year.

That's why, I suppose, this year's Songkran in Bangkok was particularly joyful, if not restful. Best of all was the traffic, or rather, the lack of it. It took me a mere 15 minutes to get from my home on Pattanakarn Road to a dinner appointment with friends on Sukhumvit Soi 31. If only Bangkok were half like this during the rest of the year, we would be in seventh heaven, relatively speaking of course.

Despite the supposed joyful period, each Songkran is marked by death. This year 271 Thais died and 3,476 were injured in 3,214 accidents nationwide. The toll is less than last year's but still the result is the same. Thais die despite the campaign against drinking and driving. Somehow we go through the motions with the same, predictable results. This year we also witnessed the gaps and inability of police - by their own admission - to deal with a hostage situation when a man, apparently high on drugs, staged a car-jacking in Nonthaburi which ended up tragically at the Victory Monument. A policeman and taxi driver were killed. A doctor was taken hostage and shot.

The debate over police performance will continue for a while - until the next incident.

But most striking of all incidents in this year's Songkran was one which occurred last Friday night, which did not involve any death or injury.

I am talking about the three girls who danced topless on Silom Road. On Monday, Bang Rak district director Surakiat Limcharoen filed a complaint with Yannawa police and urged that obscenity charges be filed against the three girls. He said the topless female revellers had hurt the image of Thailand and distorted Songkran culture.

Our esteemed Culture Minister Niphit Intharasombat wants action taken against the organisers. He also wants the girls fined and compelled to do "cultural work". Khun Niphit suggested that the girls be required to read books about the Songkran Festival for young students to listen to, as part of the punishment. National Police Commissioner Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree said he would act against the girls.

Personally, I don't condone topless dancing in public, even during holiday festivities. But I cannot believe the utterings issuing from the mouths of our esteemed government officials and the knee-jerk reaction from police. This incident and subsequent hue and cry illustrates once again the hypocrisy of our society.

Although not quite the same, this is not the first time that lewd dancing has prompted controversy. How many of us remember the controversy in October 2006, when organisers of a temple fair in Nong Khai province brought in scantily dressed Coyote dancers to perform during the Buddhist Lent?

The hypocrisy lies in the fact that we are so good at knee-jerk reactions while ignoring what we have allowed to flourish. Our cultural custodians and police don't have to go far to see how for decades we have allowed sex to become a focal point of how we are viewed and perceived internationally. And I am not talking about the go-go bars along Patpong but the sex show establishments which pepper the upper floors. Patpong may have started out as an R&R centre from the Vietnam War but we as Thais have taken it further and allowed it to flourish.

If not, how then did we allow Soi Cowboy, located in the heart of a predominantly residential area, to emerge and flourish?

We all see and know where the big massage parlours are along Ratchadaphisek and Phetchaburi roads, as well as other main thoroughfares across the city. Massage parlours aside, there are many so-called traditional massage and spas which offer special "after massage services." Just drive down Soi Sukhumvit 33 and even along the upper-class zone of Thong Lor and you will find them. These days, all these establishments not only have websites but provide catalogues of the ladies available via email.

And what about the cocktail and karaoke lounges that pepper this metropolis as well as rural urban centres? These places along Ratchadaphisek, Ekamai, Wireless and Rama IX are packed each night and weekend. It is an organised business where the clients receive weekly SMS messages promoting special shows, performances and fashion shows by sexy bikini super models and wet T-shirt competitions. There are special shows and performances for every occasion you can think of - including Songkran, Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day and even the World Cup.

And guess what (surprise, surprise), most if not all of these establishments have police and military personnel or politicians either as protectors, backers or partners. I won't bother going into the details of the cafe business.

All that I have mentioned is not new. And I am willing to bet that many Thai men (myself included) - whether they are government officials, politicians and MPs, police, military, journalists, businessmen, office workers and ordinary employees - have been to these establishments at one time or another. Let's be honest about it. If they deny ever going there, then they are lying.

As of yesterday, police say relatives of the three teenage girls are preparing to take them to report to police.

(Latest news: Topless teens fined 500 baht)

Yannawa police chief Monchai Sriprasert said the girls are reluctant to appear in public because they are embarrassed amid the growing criticism. Pol Col Monchai yesterday also urged the girls to quickly acknowledge the obscenity charges so they may incur a light punishment and be fined not more than 500 baht.

Meanwhile, those persons who distributed the video clip of the girls on the internet should face charges, he said.

With all the sex entertainment spots that we see day in and day out that have shaped how we are viewed internationally, what is unfolding is sheer hypocrisy, pure and simple. What authorities are doing is crucifying these girls publicly, getting them to admit to the obscenity charges so they can slap their pretty bottoms with a fine and then - as we often do - swiftly sweep the incident under the carpet. Alright, the girls made a mistake and they deserve a good talking to. I am willing to bet that now, with hindsight, they realise what they have done. They don't deserve to be shamed publicly. And if the authorities really want to be the so-called guardians of culture and righteousness, all they need to do is act - and they don't have to look or search very far. It has always been right under their noses. But I'm willing to bet that's not going to happen, either.

Well now that the young ladies have been or will be charged, I certainly hope that Thailand remains hypocritical and does not start to crack down on the real indecency for which we all want to take part.

... no chance Thais will get religion on just how ethically, spiritually and morally bankrupt they really are, as a nation of crooks... the great power in 'cultural' values is that they are almost Darwinian... they evolve over many generations and do not change easily, or quickly... unless foreigners come in here and administer nation-wide prefrontal lobotomies, this might be pretty much all Thailand can be for the next century.

... Thailand is almost guaranteed to have as much pussy as you need.

That was never in doubt, but more importantly is that Thailand is almost guaranteed to have as much pussy as you want. You can't always get what you want, but you get what you need. Except in the case of Thai pussy, you can get all you want; if you can afford it.

... the Thai press seems to be catching our "inferior Thai cultural values" discussion here... yet another in a series of unusual public Thai admissions: "Searching for the fourth monkey in a corrupted world."

... this one by a different writer... maybe confession is good for the Buddhist soul, too.

The by-line in this op-ed: "In fact, one adjective used to describe Thailand by many foreigners is 'duplicitous'."... (uh, the author might well be lurking amongst us about the BTF forum)

Searching for the fourth monkey in a corrupted world
By Pornpimol Kanchanalak
Published on April 21, 2011

Mahatma Gandhi made a token exception to his principle of a possession-free lifestyle by keeping a small statue of the three monkeys. In the traditional sense the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" proverbial tenets embodied by the three monkeys represent the Buddha-like attributes of not allowing evil thoughts to occupy the mind.

Nowadays, the maxim is generally about turning a blind eye, either because of empathy, wariness or weariness. It has also become the code of silence adopted by members of street gangs and organised crime bodies.
There is another school of thought that espouses a fourth monkey who embodies "do no evil". This monkey sits with his arms crossed. However, this belief has not gained widespread acceptance as the three monkeys have.

With our globalised cultural and moral decadence, we perhaps should look again at the merits of the fourth monkey. This one can also cover his nose - as in "smell no filth".

It is not difficult to understand the public outcry over the topless teenagers dancing suggestively on top of a vehicle on Silom Road during the Songkran festival. Public indecency is not something that society wants to condone.

But the incident should hardly come as a surprise. Our most infamous red-light district is in the area, just around the corner from where the incident took place. It has been there for more than five decades. In fact, it is the place whose name jumps off the lips of a significant number of foreigners when they hear the name Thailand back in their homelands. Few can recall the name of Hualampong Temple, which is located just a few blocks away on the same road.

In fact, one adjective used to describe Thailand by many foreigners is "duplicitous".

We have a rich cultural heritage that preaches good manners, aptness, decency and beauty - both physical and spiritual. We also are top of the list in the number of people professing to be practising Buddhists, and who by definition are in search of a virtuous and tranquil state of mind.

But we also have the world's raunchiest go-go bars and meat markets (not referring to livestock or poultry). If one goes to certain streets and areas that remain more lively after midnight and are frequented by teenagers, younger adults, celebrities, the well-healed and not so-well-healed, one must maintain a very open-mind, and resist falling into deep despair about the future of the country. The world has changed and decadent Western norms are the only globalised behaviour that has gained real admiration and following. In this case, one has no choice but to adopt the three moneys' dictum when it comes to the emerging way of life.

However, such a lifestyle is only the tip of the iceberg. There are far more serious issues over which we should agonise.

Drugs and corruption are the twin evils that most Thais have tried to turn a blind eye to. For whatever reasons, both evils have become more ubiquitous and more alluring.

The two bare-breasted girls at Silom were arrested and reprimanded with so much ado, but we rarely see drug pushers being paraded around for chastisement, or their pictures circulated widely on Twitter or Facebook for defaming pleasure. Ask at any police station and the officers there will unanimously tell you that the most dreadful social disease nowadays, worse than easy sex, is drugs. Some law enforcement officials and even teachers have decided to enter the market. It is the material perks they cannot otherwise afford that make the risks worth it.

We have never seen society put a (figurative) tattoo on the forehead of any corrupt politician saying "unwanted" so they never again get elected and legitimately return to steal more. We have never seen any of them repent after getting caught. They just get away with all the booty, and there are people who willingly continue to kowtow in front of them and call them "sir" as if they were honourable people.

We saw the government put an inordinate effort into erecting all those beautiful signs of "amazing Thailand" for all the world to see - and of course, every sign has a price tag much larger than the cost of raw materials and labour - but never even a tiny billboard to espouse an effective anti-drug and anti-corruption campaign. We have a gigantic elephant in the room, and it is still invisible to many.

Some wise and weary Thais express their delight that life is not permanent, so they do not have to live forever with tangential social values that are made precious, while the core and truly worthy conduct code - of honesty, decency, knowledge, hard work, prudence and civility - is fast losing its place.

Many are in search of an additional member of the monkey family, one that covers his nose. As the gargantuan elephant is becoming more monstrous and filthy, covering the eyes, the ears, and the mouth will not be enough. We need to hold our nose so we can get on with our life, to cover up the stench.

Considering Pattaya police had a stage outside their HQ on April 19th at 2pm with several scanting clad girls dancing in wet t - shirts with bantons ripped on thai whisky- it sure does just seem to be the same old chestnut of moral conviences-

For the record splash shows with models also appeared same day at royal garden mall- stage

Russian girls some in knickers also mixed with the crowds in a grope fest-
::

Awesome day

Today did the in law thing-

Left the house on a motor bike and wife and step daughter led on another-

Shop minded by trusted friend of hers-

The election trucks promoting dubious looking people passed us on way out of town- it reminded me of the "back to the future "....Mayor aspect-

It had a time warp super imposition-

Slogan like "can do" were visible-

Yes we can do - mighta worked for some home boy ?

Why not here?

Many looked like a lie detector would have a hard day hooked up to most-

Some liked straight outta adams family with that far away stare- consistant with must look proper over IQ appearnce-

The latter not available on any case - just knelling and bullshit elitist lip service-

No one would vote in high school western society for half the goons on display-

Thai cops want a piece of me no helmet - wife says some shit - and they let me go-

Its f***ing hot and we have a few clicks to cover so I stop and buy a beer-

The usual "farang shit is over heard"

I leave one of 30 thai sheets of paper I had printed in Thai that reads
""Thais beware of the need to percieve and accept all of the international community, and be gracious- because China or Japan may at a future time need your land, and given the attiitude- western powers may have no reason or cause to stop them"

""Remember Thais are not strong compared to those powers- and farangs are only more succussful as they are higher beings in intelligence and understand the above"

"Good luck in future"

My wife never knows whats on them - but boy I bet I stir theses f***ers up-

Getting into village it was all about me counting grain stocks which were way higher than reported- Cow numbers 12 more-

The parents now had cable and plasma TV

It was like you were a harpless invader wanting to be Thai-

the mind games these f***ers play with themselves is astounishing-

I just ended up sitting and using my I pod to zone out-

Every Bum within a mile fronted - total beer cost 900 baht- presents 8000-

All insincere welcomes accept mother and father who have a vested interest in me-

Ok so the thais have not been honest on grain profits- I dont care-

What annoyed me most is my generous nature being mistaken for "farang " stupidity-

Thais have a major future issue in not accepting that we are a world community-

Its total bullshit that a peasant can consider you more stupid and westerners far inferior - and laugh in your face-

I say if China wants this place at a later date the stupid f***s might get the "real picture " instead of being lyches that appear post lobotomy-

::

But you know one gem was a really pretty 18 year old girl pouring me a beer and saying ""I am leaving here in a week"

God knows why!!

Back home in Town wife is making dinner and acting so much more above the villagers said-

She gives me a back massage and BJ and has icy beers and making a "farang chicken roast"

She is learning - wheather thats a good thing or not depends on what you want to believe or hear?

At least the racist peasants have c***s written on them - and the politicans keep on giving them lies to digest with breakfast- while the temple shit again flares up and the more educated fawn acceptence-

This is not after all a "love you long time place " its the reality of what thais think of westerners-

And its not pretty

First of all, your assessment of the danger of Thailand being gobbled up by the Chinese (not "if" the time comes, IMO, but *when*) is spot on. As is your commentary elsewhere in your post on how ludicrous it is that they think US to be daft and stupid (and yes, they really do)...

However, your weird little tactic of leaving pieces of paper saying the above in Thai (if in fact you really do it) is ridiculous...you most certainly do NOT "stir theses [sic] f***ers up"...

Anyone who has spent any amount of time in Thailand should know that complaining about or pointing out Thai stupidity, hypocrisy, etc...or, while we're at it, complaining about bad service and yelling at bar staff "you've lost MY patronage of your establishment, how do you like that?!" or the like gets you absolutely NOTHING save perhaps a bewildered look or a giggle...

You're just wasting your time with that one. Like I said, IF you really even do it...which a big "if", considering the source (a DG post, haha). How about scanning one of those pieces of paper and posting the photo here?? Yeah, didn't think so.

NOW, as to your apparent racist poke at Obama:

Well, sir, you can make a lot of valid criticisms of Mr. Obama--how he's failed to live up to everyone's expectations, how he's apparently fallen into the pattern of his Republican predecessors, playing the "who will the US bomb this week?" game (a practice which, believe it or not, many of we Americans do NOT approve of)...

But calling him a "HOMEBOY"? Are you serious? Do you even know what you're trying to say about him with that term?

The man is highly educated, well-mannered and extremely articulate, much more than can be said about you, a native speaker of English (I assume?) who has atrocious spelling and can just barely coherently express himself in an English sentence...a "homeboy??" Really, even an obvious racist like yourself can do better than that.

Why do you claim he is highly educated?

If being well mannered means bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia and the Emperor of Japan, I guess he qualifies. He also gave a non-functioning DVD player to the Queen of England along with a CD of all his speeches. Is he well mannered or totally lacking in diplomatic skills and overcome with narcississtic tendancies?

Is this the same genius that has raised the national debt by over $4 TRILLION in the first two years of his four year reign.

Is this the same fool that doesn't know how many US states there are? He hoped to visit all 57 during his campaign.

That thinks the US Marine 'CORPSE" actually exists?

When will you quit drinking the liberal media bullshit and stop trying to impress us with your elitism. You're a whoremonger just like everybody else on this forum.
