J: I have a friend who used to recruit me into the same sort of thing everytime we went out -- it can be really fun and you're right; with the language problem, the fact that these girls have seen most everything and aren't phased, and the need to be "cool" -- you can come up with some really outrageous stuff and they will say "Oh yeah. I see before. My friend same same."

Oh sure, you have to be somewhat creative and clever andf yes if one is honest it is taking advantage of the listener's ignorance (not necessarily stupidity). In that I suppose it's cruel but I rationalized it by the fact that the BGs don't really care if we were really actors for sexual education films* or not and in fact they aren't even listening half the time... By the way, no offense but that friend doesn't sound real sharp... *I can't remember any of the good ones we used to do.

My friend and I had a lot of fun like that last trip. One time he was a "nigerian" businessman, and I was his translator. All he'd say in English was "Yah." We'd burble some fake african talk to each other, then I'd ask the girls "his" questions in English. Other times, I'd claim to be a thai puchai from Udon Thani. I know a little bit about Udon Thani from the web, so I knew street names, what the market is like, some of the monuments, etc. I'd say my Mamma was Thai, and my Pappa was American. I had some of them half-convinced, but it was usually more fun when they'd say, "I not believe! You bullshit me!" One girl was really smart, though. Instead of saying I was the wrong color, or didn't speak Thai well enough, or asking who I knew there, she just looked at my hands. "Not from Udon Thani," she proclaimed, "You hands too soft!"

Ha ha ha, I can visualise that! The only time I came really unstuck was when I said I was Japanese. (Obviously I look nothing like it.)

To come back to the original topic of this thread :- Yes , there is racism in Thailand - more in some sections of society than others . Yes , there are some nationalities who face more of this racism than others - but usually there are historical reasons . For instance :- I am an Indian who has been living in Bangkok for 9 years and although I find acceptance with 95% of the Thais still there are times when I get discriminated against . However I accept this philosophically and smile it away ( Incidentally a genuine and spontaneous smile can convert a Thai from despising you to actually wanting to try you out ) . I realise ( although I don't condone ) the reasons for these dislikes - in the case of Indians it comprises of our love for bargaining , our reputation for being cheapskates , our body odour , our darker coloured skin , etc. But as far as the Entertainment Business goes remember you are the paymaster . On the one (and only ) occassion that I visited HONOLULU for a Soapy I selected a girl from the Fish-Bowl . However when I went to the cashier she said that the girl wanted to know from which country I was . When I told the cashier I was from India and this was relayed to the girl she sent back word that she did not want to service an Indian . No problems there - and I just smiled . But I also thought that I should pay her back in her own coin . So I asked the Papasan whether she would agree if I paid her a tip of B2,000 up-front . You can bet that my being an Indian was quickly forgotten and the girl came rushing out . I then asked the cashier from which part of Thailand the girl was . The cashier said "Korat" . I made a face and said " Sorry , I do not like to have sex with girls from Korat " - and I walked out .
