I can only discuss a Thai rice farming family that I know well.....
the youngest daughter stayed at home to be the cook, farmer etc.
She gets the house, the brothers all have their own houses and families by the time that comes along. They own adjacent land and the youngest daughter gets the largest farm.

The bride price or "sinsot" is one of those things that is hardwired and it seems the payment of it is beyond question - Thai, farang or otherwise.
My in-laws kept the money and there was never any question or suggestion that it would be returned after the ceremony. They are "good people". Striking a fair bargain and then keeping what is paid does not make you a bad person in any other business deal.
It was never said but I know the money was kept mostly as insurance for their daughter should the marriage not work out and so that they could rescue her from farangland if they had to - airfares ain't cheap.
As an aside my GF was University educated, employed in an international company for over 10 years, computer and internet literate but after almost a year of knowing me still thought that if I turned her out on the street in farangland because dinner was cold once too often then there she would stay till she starved. (this was before I got her a tourist visa and had her come and see the place for herself). If she harboured those fears I doubt the parents felt any different.
It highlighted that we are often asking these people to have faith in a system that is alien to them. No surprise that they want to stick to what makes sense to them - money in the hand. Enjoy.

Of the three Thai farang marriages I am closely associated with, none of them paid any bride price. All the all married to girls from Southern provinces.
Maybe that is a factor.

As the originator of this tread, thought I’d post an update…. not much really to say, but I have done what I can to get this girl out of my mind (and that includes, ugh dating farang chicks). I have a big trip coming up, which includes the Philippines and LOS (amongst a few other countries as well), so I’m getting psyched for some good times as a butterfly!
I have cut off email communication with her friend and sister… but I did send my ex-tilac a final “have a nice life, take care of your health bla bla bla” email to finish it for good on my part (I know many board members will disagree with me doing this – mai pen rai).
I’ll be in LOS with 2 buddies, but they don’t arrive until about 5 days after I get there, so I’ll be on my own in BKK for the first bit (I was originally going to go to Krabi with the tilac, then meet up with my friends – so plans obviously changed now). Some board members have PM’d me and will get together for a few beers and chasing girls during that time.
Any advice on how to deal with running into any of her friends when I’m there? It’s inevitable, as a few of them do work in NEP, but I won’t let this keep me out of there! I think it’ll be ok… see how they react, and if all’s good I’d even share a drink or two with them (no f***ing though, I’ll definitely avoid that).
