Hello everybody,
hopefully you all had a good start into 2005.
I would like to understand something more related to the Thai society/families.
Currently I spend a lot of time with my TGF in HKG, last week she visited her mother in Thailand.
Normally she is quite resonable, she speaks some Cantonese, has a Bachelor in Accounting, fluent English, so for sure she has an education above average.
Resonable behavior totally ends when she met her mother/family in their hometown. This time she bought her mother a car.  Jesus, what an idea. Ok, not a new one, "her" money, that's not the deal.
What I don't understand: what does she tell her mother? She is a teacher in their hometown, so she must have some good understanding of what's going on in Thailand and BKK. Do the girls really tell their mothers "hey, look at me, I have such a good job that I can buy you a car. See you, I fly now back to HKG, to my job over there." Or what do they tell them?
I mean, if I would be a mother with a job sponsored by the government, already having a small house and a motorbike, and my daughter comes back to me with a lot of money, always when she was in HKG or SIN - I would lock her away and kick her ass.
Do the parents really accept that their daughters are f***ed by white guys and they take the money so easily and spend it to have better living conditions? How can they life with that?
Or do the girls lie in such a perfect way that their parents and mothers never have a clue about what's going on?
I would like to get some comment on this by some of the guys with a better inside view in the Thai society...

That's not exactly an answer to my question.
I know why they send money - I am travelling/working in Asia, more often in China, but never mind, same same.
But what story do they tell together with the money?
That would be interesting for me...

in thai logic, it is ok for a girl to work at a bar, as long as nobody sees it and nobody questions it in her vilage. everybody suspects it, nobody talks about it, a story is created, all are happy.
j's comments about thai social security are 100% correct. it is the big goal of every thai girl to help her parents.

Do not apply your Western vantage points to Thai culture. Not a good idea.

The few girls I talked to in my first visit to LOS told me that they tell their mom that they are sex workers (work at night, looking for rich boy friend, sleep with many many men, take care of men, bad girl, etc.). It seems quite acceptable to their mothers because that is the only way they could earn money and support their family. However, sometimes they hide the fact from their younger siblings.

here is my experience.. issaan girls tell it straight, aunties quiz your occupation in what little english they know. The father is proud that he has a daughter that wants to take his little girl to australia. And the uncle cop calls by with a greeting and accepts a scotch * father talks and thai local kick boxer is missing girlfriend cries (obviously f***ing him) father removes him. 3 years later all over. But she is better off, 20 girls quick leave to find farang. Chang rai side......no one ever know. Always a story, but some suspect. Girls there look down on issaan girls, but are same as, just smarter, and alittle harder to f*** up the arse, but price is right ok ok... Pattaya and regions around, mother was found coaching her 19 year old daughter on how to please me more. And made her an absolute slave to my will, just so I might marry her.......Its common place to expect your daughter is f***ing in pattaya, but we stick to the she is a singer story. Remember its not a christian country, and its poor, the stigma carries so far. Most of these girls love buddha and have nice souls. And the social acceptance is changing, these days a top looking superbaby of 20 can expect by 26 her retiring age in that place to have f***ed 2000 men and earned about 3 million in sponership and fees, and that money, back home quiets the judges. She usually goes on and works more or marries opens a shop and rises to a higher degree in life by 40, and pretends it was one big adventure that never happened.

I have a similar story like Dirty Guru. Several years ago I "bought" a 19 year old girl (I checked) from her mother on Pattaya's Beach Road. They both spoke 3 words english between them. So I guess they were not pro's for a long time. But mother was not stupid, she drove a hard bargain. She even wanted to throw in the big sister (27), but as I don't do waterbuffalo's, I had to decline on the offer.
The LT became a week long LT. And during that week I visited the parents home in the suburbs and the brothers home in town. Mother was always in charge  and asked me what I had seen of Pattaya. So she became my personal guide. And we (mother + the 2 sisters) visited Koh Larn, the elephant show and the Budha carved in the hillside. I think in showing me around mother was also thinking of the education of her girls.
I bought my girl some english-thai schoolbooks which she studied every day. By the time I left she could speak reasonable english already.
A good time was had for all 4 of us. Nobody was lied to and everybody knew what my role was. Friendship was genuine, but I was still the means to better their lives.
Also the whole thing maybe started as PROSTITUTION (the big word with your narrow definition) but over the week it became more, it became friendship. Maybe friendship in which money changes hands, but still friendship. And the same goes for you. You have a longtime girlfriend, so she must be more to you then an inflatable doll. The same goes for her. If you were an asshole, she would probably dump you for an other asshole.
There is no black and there is no white. If you think sex for money is prostitution and sex for free is love, you are in for a rude awakening. Just marry a hometown girl and divorce her, then you will soon know how free your sex has been. There are times you can have your cake and eat it. Enjoy them and don't let your cultural morality stand in its way.
BTW the best (and only) way to find out where her parents stand on the issue of prostitution is by asking your girl. Chances are that even your girl does not see her self as a prostitute, so tread carefuly.
The only thing we can say is : A) they know, B) they don't know, C) they don't care. And that does not solve your problem.

Seriously, I really wish some people that feel that way (above) actually sit down and do the math, only to find out that they vastly overpaid!

The girls are essentially improving their karma by helping the family.
As to what the mother thinks, she will know only too well what her daughter is doing, but the money will enable her to buy things (such as the car) which make her appear rich and successful. Appearances outweigh all other considerations for a Thai. The end justifies the means.
