Yesterday and today in the Nation there were front
page stories about Herb Simon and his marriage to the
former Miss Universe.
In yesterday's paper they noted that mom and dad got
B9.9M in cash plus diamond jewelry worth B50M. The
future Mrs Simon will get a home in the USA worth
B500M plus a house in Thailand.
Any of you wonder why the girls expect you to come up
with B20K or so to show mom and dad?? or for mom and
dad .. this is the culture, just be glad that you are
not after a trophy wife ...
A side note, Herb is 67, but the paper continues to
show him as 57 .. His age is listed on his companies
profile on Yahoo and I have to believe that it is more
correct than the Nation who was probably told his age
and didn't bother to check the facts ..

I certainly agree with that, it's the same way in the phillippines. Probably a few other countries around the region. I know India is conciderd a TWC and I work directly with Indians here in kuwait. They are always sending their monthly salary home. There are filipinos egyptians, bangladeshies, and countless others that do the same. The Thai community has receded big time here. Just a handful now, but still the same deal. All that farlang capital comeing in the Kingdom makes big deal, I suppose, to their economy. So I wonder what really was behind the collaps a few years ago? Miss management perhaps? like lets stay a TWC? I dont know...

a little off topic,but also relevant(i think).
where i work,shortage of nurses,so many filipino nurses are now employed.
good english speaking and obviously have trained as nurses in the phillipines.
they come here and spend 9 months working under supervision,with more training and am then classed as good as u.k. nurses.
send their money home as do many foreign workers working in foreign countries.
however,the british government has now decided to go a step further,and i feel a little aggrieved.
to make the girls feel more at home,they are now paying for the girls husbands and children to come to england.
a good thing in one way,but they are also paying the husbands £100 a week to be here.
that i object to.
the husbands do not work and are getting more benefits then unemployed brits and that is wrong.
they are getting more benefits from the health service for not working,then i get after 23 years of service.
plus the more husbands that come here,reduces the amount of girls looking for a good time with us falangs.

Guys.
It's more of a cultural thing... particularly in chinese and buddhist customs/society where the groom usually pays some form of dowry like gold to the bride.
They practice it even in Singapore (wahh... developed country....)
On the other hand, if u go to India, it is customary for the bride to pay dowry to the groom !!!

Yeah, I think there is the same fixation (or perhaps confusion/self delusion) with money as it is anywhere. There was this falang fella in Honolulu (Davis Group) last night (Monday) that was irritated because of the slightly higher fishbowl prices quoted to him. So he starts loudly announcing to his Asian friend (and presumably all the other customers in shouting range) how he was going home because he "gets it for free" anyway. Felt embarrassed for him for more than 30 seconds! Fortunately he didn't stay long and left.
'Getting it for free' (if it truly exists anywhere other than fantasyland) in marriage would be the equivalent of the guy who sits around, doesn't make the house payments, car payments, doesn't send the kids to college, and doesn't put bread on the table. Yeah, he's "getting it for free too."

well, if you guys feel cheated. catch this. most of the filipinos employed here in hawaii work for cheap. sure we think thats good. but afer they retire they go back to the philipines and live off U.S. Social Security in a good life style. go figure. now you know another way american money is funding a third world country!

Having been an frequent reader of your forum (do not be surprised its one of my many pastimes) for some time now, I think that I have earned the right of reply to the unfortunate comments that I have recently read not just in the local press but also in your, somewhat, unhappy forum.
I say unhappy, as it is clear to me that hardly one of your forum members have or will experience the sheer joy that has been granted to me after my long search for the perfect partner.
It has been a long and often heart breaking journey till the day that I met my love.
So I hope that you can understand that the inference, that I note from certain comments, that my wife married me for my money and that her parents also accepted me because of the dowry, is very hurtful not just to me but naturally to my wife. I know my wife extremely well and I can say (we both say) we are a perfect match and the money is only something that I am lucky to have and I also feel lucky to be able to give.
Both my wife and her family were so embarrassed by my presents and utterly refuse to accept anything more from me, but I will of course try my hardest to provide them with the small things they may appear in need of in the future.
It would of course be impossible for either my wife or her family to reduce my assets in any way that is significant to me.
I also grasp from some comments that some of you feel that other Thai ladies may act in such a manner (as described by yourselves) to exploit well meaning men of heart. Frankly I had rarely heard of such a thing occurring in Thailand previously (except in your unhappy forum), I had only thought that this was mainly the preserve of American and European Ladies. Perhaps this has been noticed by some of your forum members due to their utterly insensitive and unmanly behaviour, which I rather expect leads the ladies to behave in such a manner in return.
I feel I was so lucky to meet my wife and I remember so very well the first time I saw her so eloquent and charming as she adorned the stage. Oh how I dream every night about this first vision and this gives me such comfort on the cold evenings when my wife has other prior engagements.
I would also mention how thoroughly dejected I feel that my age has been reported on several occasions incorrectly, for the record I am 49 years old and certainly not 67 (perhaps a few of you are rather jealous and this is one way to attack me). My wife has on many occasions insisted that I act and look a mere 45.
I am in fact becoming more and more angry as I write this, so much so that I feel compelled to meet with some of you personally.
So for those of you who are man enough to face me I would be happy to discuss your unscrupulous comments face to face, at which time I no doubt will be able to offer you some wisdom on how to conduct yourselves for the remainder of your active life.
I will make arrangements to be available on Monday the 11th November (its rather difficult to go out on the weekends as my wife is very concerned that I should be comfortable at home).
I feel that the best venue would be in the ‘Star of Light&'
(please do not ask me how I became aware of this venue), but please do not arrive before 9.00pm as I may be a little engaged beforehandjob, whoops I mean before. And if by chance my wife should pass by I hope that you will at least allow me to fade into the background, for I am sure she may feel a little hurt even though my sole reason for meeting at this venue is to defend her honour.
No doubt I will see most of you next Monday, please remember to bring you own 500 baht notes.
