Hi,
Ive been a member of bkktonitre for a few years and have been to Thailand a number of times and have gone to an RT, so I have had my fair share of fun 
but now im finishing my degree and am doing my dissertation (thesis) on Prostitution in South East Asia.
Im specialising on Sex Tourism and Sexpatriates, and the ideas of:
what is a prostitute? (i.e. when does prostitution end and g/f begin... is marriage prostitution etc etc)
Is there ever free choice in prostitution?
Power structures in prostitution?
why go all the way to Thailand for prostitution?
gnereal experiences of sex tourism.
i Know there is already loads of info in the forums, and I have been going through them, but any extra thoughts will be most appreciated!

its 10,000words and counts for a fair bit of my degree.
i know all the questions are pretty general, but the subject is huge and im trying to cut it into: 1) what is prostitution? 2) the economic, social, moral, political aspects of prostitution, 3) Sex tourism.
However, there is only so much I can or want to say about my own TGs and need a bigger samle range to show ive done some 'academic' work
the views I am taking in the paper is to try and combat some of the radical feminist theory - i.e. all prostitution is rape, all prostitution is forced, all sex is a violation of human rights etc etc (these views have all actually been published and supported by a depressingly large number of people)

so is your thesis that women don't get dragged into prostitution, but do it for economic reasons or ??
If so then the previous guy has it right.. ask the girls.. how would guys be able to answer that..

Hey, wait a second.... Didn't we have this sort of 'thesis' thing happen previously? Started out the same way, didn't it?
Well, as we all know, discussions dealing with illegal affairs are forbidden, by risk of banning - so, really, we can't go into much detail.
Besides, who and what on this forum would ever give you the idea anyone would know how to deal with prostitution...? Heck, I try to stay away from that sort of thing, myself.
Okay, enough funnin' - let's see if I can help you out here, at least a little bit:
1) what is prostitution?
Dictionary definition does not really apply, as that's tained by cultural mores - and you'll most likely get as many definitions as you can get people answering this thread. Technically, it's "the act of providing financial remuneration in exchange for sexual services" - but, as you stated yourself, that could go so far as to include marriage, or girlfriends. Quandary - as the cut-and-dry definition doesn't really define it, and the real definition hasn't really been attempted.
Add to that the fcat that prostitution in the west is an entirely different beast than in Asia - whereas it is demonized by judeo-christian culture in the West, it is tolerated, and accepted as another cultural position in Asia - ranging from low-class work, to high-class concubines... further blurring the definition.
2) the economic, social, moral, political aspects of prostitution,
Again, differes from culture to culture, from one political administration to the next, wether you talk to feminazis, I mean, women, or not... At the core, 'prostitution' (for lack of a better term) would not exist if it did not meet a need, and if there weren't buyers for what's offered - what makes it a free market? Again, a plethora of reasons - despite the best efforts of the religious conservatives to shoehorn prostitution into a mold, there is none (especially, as you invariably find the same religious conservatives engaged in acts of prostitution, or worse, while at the same time condemning it).
3) Sex tourism.
That one at least is easy - 'folks heading where the getting's easy...' - it's when you have men and women streaming to specific locations, largely motivated by the availability of sex, easily, and at low prices...
Oh, wait, that could be a bunch of different things as well...
...besides, the prior advice about talking to women involved in this is better.
