Well, as an experienced 'TG Mother/Family' visitor, I have concluded the following things:
The closer you get to the parents, the harder it is to get out of their spells. This relates to either financial- and/or emotional issues.
You might look as a fool in the eyes of those who know her Thai boyfriend, who is in hiding or poses as her older brother at the scene.
BTW Are you related to the famous Dr.von Quack?

TGF homes can be somewhat rudimentary. Best to stay in Hotel, eg Charoen if up in Udon Thani, then meet on neutral ground. Went rural in Chiang Rai - TGF must have had 30 friends rush straight over. Can get messy, ugly, difficult - not worth the strain. Make sure ground rules are clear - ie NOT GETTING MARRIED ANYTIME SOON. YES I AM A CHEAP CHARLIE. Lunch, few gifts ok.

It's probably a damn sight safer than many other countries around the world. As long as you have money in your wallet & you are buying the beers you will have a great time. Always carry a credit card so that you can hit a ATM & buy more beers. Your hosts will supply the food. Possibly grasshoppers.
Remember most of the scams discussed here invloved getting into a taxi with strangers.
Thailand being a hot climate requires large quantities of ice cold beer. Things go better with Heineken.

Remember that when you go up country, always take a supply of Heinieken with you coz they only have the local shit. Then you can buy Chang or Lao beer for the family safe that you dont have to drink it !!
And always take your own toilet paper.......

Come on guys, it's not all that bad. Back in June I went with Fao and two of her sisters as far northeast you can get and still stay in Thailand. It was a wonderful experience. One that I will remember for a long time. The food was great, the people were friendly, the children entertaining, the grasshoppers delicious. Their house was very plain with electricity as the only modern comfort. Cooking with charcoal (homemade) visit to the Wat for the morning ceremony. I wouldn't trade the experience for the world (except for the long drive). Give it a try and rough it with the natives.

There is no single or simple answer to your question because IN MY MOST HUMBLE OPINION each situation would depend on :-
- the type of person you are ( eg. if you are easily embarrassed into making committments ; if you are overly kind-hearted ; etc. )
- the type of person the particular BG is (eg. if she is the hardened type ; if she is a friendly fun-loving type ; etc. )
- And the level at which your relationship is with her ( eg. have you just met OR do you just know each other on and off over a period of time OR have you progressed to the "I love you" stage, etc. ).
As you can see there are countless permutations of situations that can apply - and, of course, each situation may need different handling.
However, what has to be kept in mind, are :-
(1) In most cultures when a female invites a male to her home to meet her parents and family, it usually indicates that in her mind she has taken your relationship to another level ( whether that level is a more permanent relationship OR whether that level is the stage at which you are ready for bleeding will depend largely on the particular combination of the 3 factors cited above ).
(2) It is safe to assume that in most cases the BG's social and financial status is NOT higher than yours - SO she is not inviting you home to show off her home or her family. Rather she may be inviting you home to show you off to her family and friends - which means that a certain amount of "showing-off" on your part (generosity, etc. ) may be expected of you from the BG and more so from her family.
(3) Even if the BG is really in love with you and does not want to take advantage of you in any way - you can rest assured that in most cases the family and friends will look upon your visit as a "golden" opportunity never to be missed.
With those general guidelines ( and also keeping in mind the practical advice given by earlier posters ) I would recommend that you take every opportunity to accept every invitation to visit a Bg's home.
