Here is a question for all you experienced expats; my Mia Noi has asked me to marry her in a Buddist ceremony, what are the implications? As far as I understand, this ceremony is not officially recognized nor registered with the Thai government, is this correct? I see this as a commitment ceremony that will personally bind us together and nothing more, am I mistaken? My Mia Noi is fully aware that I have a wife and family and that I will never end that relationship, I think that she just wants that same level of commitment to her. She see's this ceremony as my personal vow to her that I will take care of her for the rest of our lives. I have already personally committed to this idea. I love her and want to maintain a relationship with her for the rest of my life. I trust her and I know her personal background (both from her and from other friends of mine whom I trust) and do not see any trouble on the horizon, but we are talking about a love relationship which, is always fickle at best.

Is there something I am missing? Is there something I should be on the lookout for? Would it be so terribly bad to go through with it? I really appreciate your advice.

I would run this by a Thai lawyer who speaks fluent English.

If the trust you imply between the two of you really exists, she will believe that you fully intend to stay with her and support her for the rest of your lives.

Once you go through the Buddhist wedding ceremony, you are married in the eyes of her community. This is profoundly dishonest as it makes you a biggamist. (sorry for my bluntness here). I doubt she will be telling everyone that you have a family back home.

A good friend of my SO has been married to a German man for 20 years. Now he has a mia noi and this fact has and continues to be an arrow in her heart. But the worst part is that the mia noi continues to press to become the number one as she is 20 years younger and wants more attention. She is even trying to get to move in to the house he built for his first wife and have her move out.

In other words, this is just the first step (consciously or subconsciously) for her to become closer and closer to you. I think that she will eventually press for you to leave your family and for you to register the marriage at the Ampur which would make it legal and insure financial consequences if and when a divorce occurred.

A mia noi is a concubine, plain and simple. My advice is to leave it there. Making more promises to her is very unwise and is likely to lead to more heartache than you can imagine.

She will not leave you if you are supporting her. Her desire for a guarantee and not getting it is the price she pays for chosing to be a number 2. That is why she will always press to become number one.

What will you do when one day she threatens to tell your family about the marriage and send pictures of the wedding to them ??

God I hate being cynical, but you need to hear this.
Sorry. Good Luck !!

How do you pronounce “Mia Noi”? Also, what is the exact definition of it?

My ex-TGF use to call me what sounded like “mah noi” all the time… I thought it meant “boyfriend” hmmm… maybe there’s more to this than I thought!

Forsa.
