my suggestion would be to not hit on the chicks in the shops, but the customers
the ladys who work in the shops get off late from work every night
just smiling doesn't do it though, with the customers walking around, have to actually approach them
ask them for directions to Pizza Hut or the Food Court
Helps if you speak Thai, usually breaks the ice nicely 
just spent the better part of Saturday afternoon cruising MBK, so many hot Hot HOT chicks

I agree with LY's comments. But in my experience another good place to chat to these girls and break the ice is the smoking areas they have adjascent to the carpark. This way the girls are able to speak much more freely than when they are when working in their shops ( under the beady eyes of their managers ! )
A few months ago, got talking to a girl who works in MK ( unmistakable uniform) and we exchanged nos. but alas nothing came of it.

If you can fluently communicate, use the one of the best and from the flank openers. This is 99% rapport. I use it on a daily basis here in Calif, and have tried it with good success in LOS even in broken English. I think it will work even better there.
1.Go up to a TG or group of TG.
2. Make sure you are dressed decently and have a good posture.
3. Walk buy, swing back and say (or your own variation) ;
"Hey, I need your opinion. You look smart and I really need a women's opinion on this. My sister and I were debating this......... (keep em waiting and wondering a bit). How lies more, women or men (trust me, they will give you enough material for you to carry on the chat). Don't drool over them and make sure they know you are busy. Get them to a eatery and take it from there or...get their number....put it into your phone and call it to make sure she is not bullshitting.....and than split. Do this 5-10 times and you will get something. Oh yea, follow up on the calls later on so you can set something up that night.
The point is don't come across as another horny desperate farang. Be unique and different.

The enclave near the toilets just next to the payphones at Emporium 4th floor comes to mind! The girls sitting on the small bench who aren't in deep conversation on their mobiles are the first targets.

Not always so! Unless you mean the Emporium Department store proper? Tho I've had luck there whilst shopping with a friend (fellow BKT) who was buying his lady (former Orbit chick) a watch.
It wasn't a Cartier and the sales girl was very approachable. Not the type you might find in Guess or the other various boutique stores.... the girl that is.
As a happy or potentially unhappy coincidence I got a Valentine's email from a former CEP Dollhouse dek serve regular who is now working at the ticket selling booth/counter, 6th floor Cinemas. And I know she doesn't care if yer not a 'big-spender' :-D
