Ok, checked everywhere for a similar topic and didn't find one, which surpirsed me, so if there is another thread on this I apologise for duplicating it.
Onto my question...Is there some way, other than a PI, that we can find out if our Tilac is already married ? Is there a website, a central government registration office, or some government body that would hold records ?
I already know my LTGF is married to a Thai in the religious sense, who went of the scene 6yrs ago but I want to double check the legal marriage side.
Any ideas ?

What do you mean in a religious sense? You mean a marriage prformed in a temple is no marriage. I doubt if there a Web site like that. I know only the state of Nevada (in the USA) has a web site where you can check the marriage between two persons.

Onera > doesn't matter where the marriage was performed, temple or not, unless (I'm talking Brits now) you have have an affirmation of freedom to marry from your embassy saying they will let you marry a Thai, and unless you have that translated into Thai and unless you then get that translation authenticated at the Thai office in Laksi and then unless you provide this to the Thai regsitry office, and unless they give you a marriage certificate, then no, you are definetly not legally married either by your own countries law, or Thailands. You've just had a nice little shindig with some monks and handed over an amount of cash for the privelage. Of course I still class myself as married, but legally I am not.
I hear you on the website, it was way too hopeful, but not even an office where the documents can be viewed ?

Really no other way to check than to get a PI.
Each Amphur's District can issue marriage licenses and I know of no central clearing house where you can find out if a young lass is legally married or not.
When you legally marry at an Amphur's office, you will receive two marriage certificates, laminated, for you and your wife. Should you later get a divorce, you will be required to surrender the originals or have a police report that says they are lost.
When you get a divorce, you will then receive a divorce certificate, again duly laminated, that show this fact.
Ask to see her divorce decree.

Thanks ExpatChuck, she was only married to this Thai guy in the religious sense, there was no registration, at least thats what I have known for 5 years, but now I want to register our marriage, she doesn't seem overly bothered, sighting we're already married, why spend all the money on a piece of paper, (cost will end up being about 20,000 Baht with all the documents and translations). It seems like a good reason, but being overly paranoid and sceptic in Thailand always makes you wonder about everything, maybe in this case unnecesarily.

Having been there and done the both issues I can confirm that 'expatchuck' is 100% correct.

I would not be overly worried by her lack of interest - it sounds about right. Money is too valuable to waste and in her mind (and more importantly in the minds of her family) she is already married to you.
What will you gain from an official registered marriage anyway? Waste 20,000 baht or force her to commit bigamy, how will either help you or change anything?
I thought the public ceremony with the monks and the piss-up afterward are what makes a marriage to most working class Thais. Enjoy.

it does not cost 20 000 THB if you not from African country with no translators in Thailand. Express is 5000 THB for normal EU and USA or less.
Well she can not get married tvice she will brake the law and I guess she do not want to do that.
And yes there is a Central register some were beucase they can see on the ELECTION papers if youare maried or not. I guess a visit to her local village were she has her house pappers will sort you out. I do not think she dares maried twice so I say go for it and if she backs down then you know for sure.

have a look at her id card.
if u can read thai, before the her name (i think), there will be a salutation that either infers unmarried or married.
if she had legally married in th, then the id card should logically be changed to reflect such.
additionally, until recently, when a women marries legally, she had to adopt her husband's surname.. so have a look again at her id card and see if the surname is the same as her "religiously" married guy..

In my case, because we were living in Singapore at the time, I got legally married in Singapore. The thai authorities were not notified, and my home country authorities were contacted, but informed me there was no need to inform them.
Whatever. We are legally married, but it would never show up in any Thai administration system.
