I was browsing around and came across a chat site that had these rules for their members:
Rule#1: Please do not tempt scammers, NEVER EVER send any money to anyone in the site. Scammers would not exist in this world, if no one to send them easy money. If someone asks for money or any kind of financial help, you will likely to be scammed at your own expenses!
Rule#2: Never send money at all ! If you send money you will be scammed. Please find bellow, some of the most common scams.
Illness scam:
(her children, her parents, relatives) got ill and she needs money for operation or/and for expensive medicine. And as it is a question of life or death (there's no money to pay for it) she appeals to you for help. As soon as money is received scammer disappears.
Standard scam:
It's the most used scenario plan. Scammer tries to keep up a regular correspondence, but all letters have general content and there is no concrete information in them. After changing a few letters the scammer begins urgently to ask money for covering expenses for using Internet, translator payment, foreign languages courses, driving courses and so on. Using this scenario scammer will always asserts that for keeping up a correspondence with you one has to use paid services, which one will ask you to pay. It will be continuing until you send money. As soon as you stop doing it scammer disappears.
Plane ticket and Visa scam:
In order to visit you scammer asks you for a material help (visa, tickets, insurance, etc.). Besides there's no time to be slow and the money should be sent in few days. As soon as money received in half cases scammer disappears. The other half continues to develop the scenario because you're already caught. You continue to receive tender letters with detailed accounts about official registration of the documents. And next stage of scam begins. Visa problems occur and she needs more money; visa can be received in another city so, she needs more money to buy tickets (pay for the living and food) to go to this city to get visa; there are expensive tickets only and this means additional expenses and so on. It will be continuing until you send money. As soon as you stop doing it scammer disappears.
Rule#3: Ask for live webcam chat, don't trust web photos only. It can be anyone on the photos she sends to you. it's so easy to get fake photos over the internet
Rule#4: Ask for landline phone, don't trust mobile phones. Make sure to call anytime without warning
I would suggest that these rules should apply in any long-distance relationship with a TG.
Disclaimer: I know that this post will invoke the ire of several brothers who will insist that their TG is pure and could not possibly scam them. Yeah, right, then keep beliveing that and do not waste a post...

Had a Russian girl trying that scam on me, and I offered to send her the ticket instead, and when I asked for her mailing address and a land line to call (since the courier required that), she soon disappeared.

Don't forget that there are lots of people landing in BKK every day on their first visit to LOS.
It is this kind of info that could stop them getting sucked in, after a trip or 2 they don't (hopefully) fall for this kind of scam.
There will always be new scams to look out for, and even the most experienced traveler should be told about them!

It might be Mark Foley on the other end for all you know.
