Sorry if this is in the wrong section but can anyone explain what ‘Blood Issan’ means?
I had to take my longtime girlfriend to Samitivej as she needed her tonsils removed. A routine blood test showed a ‘problem’. My GF said she had ‘blood Issan’. I was bit shaky when the doctor called her in for the test results as he looked pretty serious (I thought we were about to get some life changing news!).
A few people have said it something to do with the quality of blood (basically it not very good). One guy also said that girls with this type of blood will find it very hard to get pregnant.
I have noticed that my GF does not have the regular menstrual cycle. She has her ‘men’ perhaps only once each year. (Good news for me I suppose as I avoid the hormonal mood swings). I always thought this was due to her somewhat small size (4’ 11” and only 38kg’s) I remember reading that small ladies (the example was gymnasts) can sometimes miss their periods but perhaps the old ‘blood Issan’ has something to do with this too.
Any ideas?

my TGF from the North had a similar situation with her period
she would get it, but almost no blood came out. We could keep on having sex with no nevemind
the doctor put her on some pills that said were for conditioning her blood
her bOObs got bigger and she started having regular flow
she also turned into a heinous bitch about the same time, so we have since stopped seeing each other
ask if they can't prescribe some Yah Bumroong Leuat
oh yeah, and I think my old TGF also was pretty much unable to have children as well, which I considered a plus

I would take with more than a grain of salt any Thai woman or man's medical opinion. Their mind is full of rumors and supersticions. 'Blood Isaan'... What's next?

I'm not surprised if someone nowadays in BKK has vitamin deficiencies. Eating their mucky mass produced food out of plastic bags.
As for her symptoms I'm sure theirs some normal condition that may or may not be more likely to befall SEAsians that can explain it.
Why didn't you ask the doctor for the medical terminology? You could have found out the problem in more detail. Your girlfriend is satisfied with that kind of explanation. But you're not. You can ask.
Unfortunately almost all Thais lack both the education and the Curiosity to ask doctors and pharmacists questions about conditions; also their culture encourages unquestioning trust and obedience. Doctor or Pharmacist says "Take these pills for stomach pain 3 times a day after meals" and they say Yes Sir. It occurs to people here rarely if at all to wonder what they're ingesting and why.

Isn't sickle cell anemia (common among Africans) an evolutionary adaption to malarial infested areas? In other words, there is a mutation to the genes encoding for hemoglobin which make it harder to get malaria? I am wondering if it is this?
