At last, clarification on the age of the staff working in bars. It seems that girls working in naughty bars must be 18 years of age or over. However, customers of bars must be 20 years of age or over. This means that, if for example you barfine a girl from Bar A who is 18,
and want to take her to Bar B, then she can't enter Bar B legally. So, any girl who you barfine who is 18 or 19 you can’t actually take to a bar other than the place where she works and you only have the option of taking her back to your apartment or hotel. BUT, it does seem that 18 and 19 year old girls ARE legal...
Maybe TPE can better expand on this?

My understand is that it is not illegal to sleep with a prostitute who is not under 18 (by the normal definition of age). There are cases where it is legal to sleep with a girl (or boy) under 18, but there is a specific statute that makes it illegal in the case of prostitution. I don't believe the laws are different for Thai and Farang men, but a Farang will probably have a very difficult time convincing the police and a judge that his relationship was not one of prostitution (even buying her dinner could be misconstrued if they want to prosecute you).
The silly "19 years old" rule ... usually comes from people who are trying to figure out the age from the IDs. If you subtract the birth year from the current year and come up with 19 you're safe. If it's 18, you can't be sure ...

that sounds pretty right chompoo - dozens of instances of Thai Girls having babies at 15,16,17 and no prosecution for the father at all - although again, perhaps farangs need to be aware of someone trying to set them up - from past posts, it sems a particularly young girl, who is very keen to take you to a particular short time hotel, is to be avoided, or treated very warily. IDs are often checked at nightclubs, but fake ones abound amongst Thais, - also you often just have to pay 100 bt extra, and can get in [ thats to places only normally frequented by Thais,] I can quote currently 2 or 3 girls I know of presently, who are working full time in bars, who are 16 - and no doubt just amongst the forum guys, there are many more - I know they have fake ID, but after talking to them a while in Thai, and putting 2 + 2 together, have worked it out, and then they will quietly admit it - obviously it is known, as in all cases, the girl had an older sister also in the bar concerned. I dont think a great worry for Guys, but certainly, if in doubt, avoid any short time hotel, or upstairs bar bedroom !

Over at bahtbus.com there's an interesting "method" intro tricking the girls into revealing their true age.
Ask them what animal year they were born on. I doubt most of them can do that math in their head and may just give you the right one. Then a quick look-up to figure if it matches.

One Thai law says 18, another says children are not emancipated till 20 and therefore, one needs parental consent.
Safer to stick to 20+ than to have to negotiate with the police or explain to a judge.

- yes, typical case of TIT - having babies at 16/17 no problems, but to get married, a girl under 20 has to have parents signed consent .... - didn't realise they got into the MP's at that age pinga, thought just the Bars, but then again, knowing Thailand, plus the "extra" price they would attract, I guess it figures, - Chinese birth sign is good, use that myself at times -

the law makes it possible that the girl being 18 years old can work in the bar, to proof that she is on duty, she should punch some time card or something equivalent, after she signs out, she must leave and can not stay there as a customer, and lately the police comes (especially in proposed "zoning" areas) and checks this contradiction.
