Say, you are walking down the street and you see this big farang man holding hands with a little girl maybe 12-14 years old, who is dressed in "unmistakable terms."

What would be your reaction?
1. You don't react.
2. You shrug to yourself and pretend not to look.
3. You are horrified, glare at the man and make clear your disgust.
4. You tap him on the shoulder and have a word with him.
5. You catch his eye -- and grin.
6. You track him and then inform the police.

I ask this question because I am reminded of an occasion 2 years ago when I was walking down a road in Singapore and saw this scene.

What did I do ? Shrugged to myself and pretended not to look.

I tend to go for number 3 -- but I don't fool myself into thinking that I'm doing any good or even that I'm rright to do so; it just makes me feel a wee bit better. What I really want to do is go up and get into a confrontation with the guy but since when did I become an Interpol Agent?

I once actually stopped and shouted out "Hey!" when I saw a guy reaching for the crotch of a young boy he was talking to in a doorway (in broad daylight), then I stopped, glared and gave him a gesture of "Wanna say something back?" when he turned to look at me. He looked ashamed and annoyed and stepped back from the kid. I did what I did without any prior thought but I had been watching the guy as I walked by and it was clear what was going on...and my reaction was rather a surprise to me.

To this day I feel both glad and embarrassed about it.

The operative word seems to be

This is clearly open to wide interpretation. My Thai wife's niece is 12 years old and an absolute stunner with a modern (not provocative) sense of fashion. She'll often hold my hand when crossing a road or walking/shopping in a crowded area, whether in the company of other family members or not.

I really don't care what other people perceive the situation to be, but if approached by anyone with some wise comment, I'd clearly provide a suitable reaction.

Number 2.

Sheer cowardice. Not at all satisfactory. Didn't feel good about it.

I was in Phnom Penh at the time and... well, what can you do?

PS: Kid was probably under 12 & NOT dressed in unmistakable terms, which just makes it worse.

Damn! I got the number wrong. I meant to say always go for number 3. But as I said, I don't think it makes any difference or is anything to be proud of.

I was only once facing such a situation where I thought it was needed that I took responsability. It was while I was working in the Phils. a few years back. We had a falang man in his fifties coming to the resort with a filipino boy who was possibly 14 to 16 years old. When I was watching this scene, I interfered and I told the receptionist in Cebuano to say to the man that we are very unfortunately fully booked. There was no trouble and he left our premises.

definitely not #'s 1, 2 or 5... turning a blind eye is just not something I am good at.

I doubt as a 5'2" female #4 (confrontation) would be very effective.

#3 (make clear my disgust)... hmmmm, I think I'd be to worried the girl was his daughter and probably also too worried for my own safety.

I have used the #6 option here in my own country when I suspected something similar

If I felt my own personal safety wasn't compromised I think I would opt for option #6 (follow him and inform the police) or at least find some like-minded-equally-horrified persons to assist me in #6

Kaymanx, strangely enough, like you said re your experience in Singapore... I and some friends witnessed something similar here.... and they all just shrugged and went about their business.  Sure I agreed with them that we couldn't be sure that something illegal was happening... but isn't that what the police do?  They decide if or not a crime is taking place.
