Stickman is an English teacher = no money. I've had a happy marriage with a Thai girl for 15 years and she has stuck with me with and without money, so, why should I read Stickman? As to mykal, well, some men were born to die single.

As Chateaujade, I have to disagree as well. Of course, most of us have got hurt by falling for a girl who think of us as walking checkbooks, but this is not the case with all Thai women, just like in the rest of the world. In most cases, it's pretty obvious early on if a woman truly loves you or not. In my case, I used to live in Thailand with a thai gf some years ago. She had more money than me at the time and actually spent most of her savings supporting me, never asking me to pay anything back. (Note that we are about the same age - if you're twice as age as your girlfriend you have to ask yourself what she really sees in you). Cheers, Jim in Az

True jimaz, however from what I understand about the Thai custom (and I am no authority) and how they view farangs almost necessitate them asking or expecting you to provide for them and their parents who they are ulitmately loyal to. I think that there are a small percentage of women in Thailand who will shun this type of requirement but I am not one to really say since I have not nor ever plan to marry a Thai woman. And I give Chateaujade some credit, he is right I was born never to get married though that is a personal choice, at least at this point in my life. I still question those who marry a bargirl. That to me seems a bit clueless. However all the degrees on earth do not make one smart now do they? LOL Mykal

Mykal, if you have anything to say about my wife, you'd best say it out loud and not sniggering behind your hand. That way your hand won' t be in the way when I kick your teeth out. Yeah she was a BG for a few years back before 15 years ago. And she is also the finest human being I have ever known. A contest that certainly lets you out.

You are correct Mykal - if the parents are poor you are ultimately expected to provide for them. ŬI can not blame the girls for expecting this. In most 3rd world countries (at least se-asia and africa), whoever has more money is expected to share it with friends and families in a way that is very foreign to westerners. Of course, most bargirls come from very poor families, so by marrying one you should expect a lot of pressure from her family. Needless to say, I don't plan on marrying a bg - but congrats to Chateaujade for a good catch Jim in Az

OHHHH! Big man with all the degrees wants to get physical now huh? I thought smart people used diplomacy? Well if you can stretch your old ass leg over here to the USA old man feel free. However I think you are better served staying there in Thailand watching your investment circle down the drain. He he he. As for your wife, if I was in LOS a few years ago (like 15) then maybe I would have taken my cheap shot then, instead of now... Get my drift??? Hey, I never had any beef with you. I even ignored you when you first poked at me several times, cursing me and such because you did not agree with my opinions. However, you seem to keep challenging me on things that are opinionated and have nothing to do with you. And the shot was at you not your wife she is the unfortunate bystander, evidently at the altar also... Now I will respect you if you respect me, but you have to give... to get. Mykal

In the first years of our marriage my support to my wife's family amounted to maybe 1000-2000 baht a month (at 25/$US). Later they lost their little house in Bang Sohn and moved in with us (we had our first house by then) and that was enjoyable. Also they rotated among their other children when possible. The burden was not exclusively on my wife (and through her on me.) We are only talking about my mother and father in law. Also my stepson who was six when I came into the picture, now 21. A couple years later my wife's father had a fatal stroke while visiting some relatives upcountry. I miss him. My mother in law still spends about half her time with us or more. She is very nice. Shares my son's room. No, I never had to support an entire Isaan village nor a herd of water buffalo. But, what help I have given my wife's immediate family has never been abusive nor have I begrudged them a single baht. I have never had any cousins come asking for a loan, either.
