I noticed ThaiprivateEye mentioning somewhere that one of the things he missed was not being able to have the occasional "heart to heart" conversation - chewing the cud - discussing the meaning of life - etc type of conversation with his long term TG ( correct me if im wrong here TPE ). Obviously lack of education plays a role here- as maybe culture does - but how many of you guys that are a) living in LOS and b) are in a long term relationship with a TG - have a TG that can "chew the cud" on these issues ( analysing people, current affairs, the question to the answer "42" etc etc )
Dont get me wrong - I realise no one has these talks all the time - and LOS is above all a place of smiles and "sanook"

I think you really hit the nail on the head, nonchai. However, I think it might be difficult to get many strait answers on this. In the end, you just won't know the full story unless and until you try your own hand at it. Be sure to read Private Dancer... it could be required reading for those who are trying to get a grasp of the LOS culture gap.

It's hard to do in my home country. Many women and for that matter most men don't read newspapers etc and are not interested in anything other then sports. The level of misinformation is AMAZING
If I lived in LOS, I would learn Thai and I would make my gf learn english. I would read the local Thai newspapers and I would make her read also.
One women Ms Pen who works at the Kangaroo Club, Patpong has the best command of english of anyone I've meet in the BG scene. Her husband taught her english and she's one smart lady. Fun gal to spend time with. Be carefull with her, you may think you will only spend one night with her and you could end up with her for the whole trip.

I remember having a debate with a TG on economics this was mainly due to the fact she wanted to charge me 2000 baht for a short time.
It was commical trying to explain market economy and inflation to her combined with tourist ecomomy of LOS.

I agree that it is probably a more exceptional occurence here but not impossible. I wouldn't limit that disinclination to females either. The Thai education system and the culture do not typically engender or encourage analytical/critical thinking or the sort of free ranging intellectual discourse that is more prevalent in the west. It's certainly not a matter of intelligence or ability.
As in all things there are of course exceptions and certainly there are Thais who are highly educated and enjoy more "intellectual" conversations. Even the uneducated "country girls" sometimes have the sort of minds that are suited to enjoy and excel at more serious topics if they are given some mentoring and such.
Like Yurune; I can and do have those sorts of conversations fairly often.

BTW, during your absence, I (along with a few others here) became even sillier. So,... please don't be too hard on me now with your very sensical always right on target comments.
On the topic, itself.... Iam a bit undecided. It is difficult I think most of the time (nothing to do with language - I am thinking of some who speak perfect English).... but .... it takes some going before they are in the mood. I have some half-half friends (luk krung) and they agree that the intensity of conversations is short of what friedns in Europe would normally discuss, which is also regularly more dense than in the USA; or at least more frequent.
