With the wife not long. In Europe it wasn't long before my basic Thai ran out and she couldn't be bothered to pick up the lingo.
With the TGF's....Fine for a while but after a short time things couldn't progress because of that lack of communication. OK communication in bed was fine but that isn't everything(might be to some people?).
With a fluent English speaker things are bound to be different. Unfortunately I haven't met many of those.
For some little communication is great for others a necessity.
Anybody had a long relationship with a Thai girl that spoke basic English ???

Again I refer you to my Kiwi friend in PI. His TGF speaks 6 langauges fluently and English is not among them. My friend's employer even picked up the tab for English lessons for her once she got to Manila but she could'nt be bothered.
Her English is passable and she is getting better as she must speak English or Tagolig to get around in PI (and she will never speak the 'animal language' as she calls Tagolig).
5 years for them and still going. Maybe because he is 48 and she is 42. That might have something to do with it.

10 years and counting.
She spoke very little english when we first met.
Put here in an english scool for 2 years in Thailand before she moved with me to Europe where she went to scool for 4 years to learn my language + primary scool.
As long as the girl is willing to learn there is no problem. many other thaigirls in my country are yust to lazy to learn.

Of course, if you've taken her to farangland and she's not willing to learn, I'd say the relationship will be stuffed anyway - she'll just be far too dependent on you, and you do NOT want to be almost the only focus of a TG's thoughts.
Probably best to require her to reach a good standard of English (and/or whatever) in LOS before you let her join you abroad. Make this a condition and don't weaken.
If you want to settle with her in LOS, of course, the onus is on you to work on your Thai.

See my posting in the "girls outside the scene" thread for more details on my relationship, but...
...a somewhat key issue in our relationship was our ability to communicate. ÝMy ex-gf is brilliant, but one area she just plain stinks at is languages. ÝAfter living in the US for three years (and during that period studying for Master's degrees in engineering and MBA, fully taught in English), she still did not really pick up the language. ÝAnd making fun of her saying "fich" for "fish", and her inability to pluralize and use articles correctly, did not help your relationship, let me tell you. Ý
The problem of course went two ways - I couldn't be bothered to learn Thai (never saw the professional benefit in it). ÝInstead I speak Chinese because I feel at least that will get me somewhere. ÝI'm probably more guilty of negligence here than she is, since she can speak English (crappily), but I cannot string together too much in Thai.
As a result, a critical problem was the inability for us to converse in ways that we found enjoyable. ÝI have a really biting, sarcastic sense of humor; she just could not understand it. ÝShe apparently is amazing with Thai, can twist the language to make amazing jokes and to sound very charming. ÝI of course could not be able to understand what she was saying. ÝSo we really lost out on our ability to connect and make each other laugh, which was a real killer in the relationship.
A bigger problem I always found was an inability to hold serious conversations - this was partially I think a cultural issue (she doesn't care about politics, she does care about "cute", I couldn't give a flip about "cute", I love politics). ÝNot every Thai is the same, so generalization here is dangerous, but my general impression of all Asian women is they turn into 15 year olds in relationships. Ý

I'm not really qualified to judge other Asian women, but I certainly wouldn't hope to get my political fix from any TG. The same goes for many other things which are of great importance to me. On the other hand, 'cute' can be fun too if you can acquire a taste for it.
I think there's a general problem these days in that people put far too much weight on 'the relationship', and not nearly enough weight on their friendships with other people. When relationships go wrong, it is often due to the disappointment of expectations which were never very realistic in the first place. I think this applies as much in same-cultural relationships as x-cultural ones.
You have your limitations, she has hers. Don't blame her for not giving you things you had no reason to expect, and seek whatever else you need elsewhere.
Thinking of the TGs who matter to me, I'm not sure any of them have a very wide repertoire. But what they do do, they do brilliantly, and they have made themselves quite indispensible.

Yeah, indeed, come to think of it, my ex in the US and I blew up partially because she is an arch-republican, me a democrat. She despised Billy Boy; I liked him. She's now married to a member of the Republican National Committee; good for her. We were in love, and could survive the politics - hell, James Carville, one of Clinton's close advisers, was married to Mary Matalin, an arch-republican pit bull if there ever was one.
The communication problem was a problem however - lack of ability to appreciate eachother's sense of humor; lack of ability to find common topics to talk about other than sex; cultural differences in communicating affection, interest, etc. It got to be too much.
Again, mutual-fault situation - both of us were at fault for this.

Just to back-track - accusing TGs of having a fairly narrow repertoire was a bit unfair. Perhaps I should say that the part of their repertoire that I can use (or even comprehend) is somewhat restricted. Doubtless this works both ways.
Ah, communication - but what is that? Western men like to concentrate on the verbal, but it doesn't hurt to be forced to give other communication muscles some much-needed exercise.

Thai woman can be what you want in a woman, some are very learned about the world and its basic affairs. ÝThey are neat mostly, more likely to keep house (western woman literally do) Ý by way of tidy behaviour. ÝWestern woman think ..wash..ing ..cook..ing...f_ck..ing Ýare three cities in china. Thai woman respond to affection better, (think of brains as a pc....western woman have a virus) Ýyou get too much downloading of information on one comment"what did you do after work today?"'...a million mind games happening! ..Thai woman are by race ,culture , and Ýreligion, less likely to invade your space.where mens matters are concerned..ie i am off for 2 hours for a beer!.....I am married to a thai , and her politics out of the bedroom are limited to happy social things.., sure you want more. go find a 45 kilo 150 cm Ýup to you western chick who will wash your back and talk turkey.....politics is 90% bullshit anyhow......its a choice........i know some thai woman who know about zogovs military tactics on germans trapped in the 6th army at stalingrad....250,000 killed....and the implications it had on not just the war but politics in europe afterwards......some have degrees you know buddy...infact though not often educated, have high intelligence!
