I originally posted this list on the thread Falling in Love. The excellent 'Arcadius' thought it an impressive list. With such an accolade I thought the list warranted a debate of its own. Some of my points are borne of hard experience, other points from the experience of people I know or know of. The post is not anti Thai girl but just a word of caution. I discussed with 'Kryptonite' that although one can get good advice one often ignores it and in the end one learns by hard experience. I keep thinking of the Russian proverb 'Life is your best teacher' ? A friend who owns a restaurant has lost custom because he has warned westerners that their 'tilac' is not 'different from the rest? This is not intended to be a negative post but a constructive one for the 'lads' that visit LOS and end up falling for a Thai girl. The quote at the end is from the book 'Money No.1' ("Hello there sexy man) - a survivors guide to Pattaya by Neil Hutchison.
I/we fall in love with girls that:-
Usually have a Thai boyfriend or Husband in the background.
Speak minimal English (We think they can always learn)
Have a very basic education
Cuturally are very different from us i.e. love and sex are separate and not part of the same thing
Often have four or five other farangs sending them money
Are great actresses at faking emotions
Are only interested in the money
Are allegedly well down the league table of nation bed performers (but high up in the 'starfish' league)
Gamble too much
Drink too much
Do not understand that if they spend all their money today they will have none tomorrow!
Are selfish
Use the term 'Jai dee' (good heart) frequently and without meaning it
Have no idea about time
Earn a living by selling their bodies
Are 'run' financially and mentally by their families
Hate living outside Thailand
Often lazy and sleep all day
Often very attractive and good fun
Addictive (not to drugs but for farang)
Live 6 thousand miles away from where you live and earn a living
Cause you to feel homesick for Thailand
Cause you to lose interest in 'Western' women
Take Ya Baa
Had more men then I've had pints of beer
Think we are stupid for falling in love
Need money for the boyfriend's motorbike, family waterbuffalo or their mobile that got eaten by a monkey
It is possible that some of the above points apply to ALL Thai girls ?
And so on and so on
And as the writer said,"Where's the worst place on the planet?"

Chill out brother ! You pay girls a few bucks for sex and you expect them to be disinterested high class ladies with a pure heart and the best manners. How sensible is that ?
If you are looking for love don't worry, there is a whole world outside of the sex tourist areas and naughty internet personals !

I think that most women are similar the world over but in LOS all the points seem to come together in one hit, as many a tale I have heard which covers either one, two, three or more of the points raised.
By the way all three books are a good read depending if your in the arrivals bay or departure lounge, as I've heard it said "wish I knew that before I got here"

The bottom line is that you are a farang on Thai turf. Thai girls (BGs or otherwise) are the way Thai girls are. They are not Western girls in disguise and they don't play by Western rules.
If you want to succeed in building a relationship with them (and plenty of guys DO succeed), the onus is really on you to adapt. Either stay in your mental box and leave them alone, or climb out of it and cope.
Hermie, I know I've said this before, but you should take your friend aside, and explain to him that few people are likely to appreciate a restaurateur putting his clunking great hoof through their enjoyable holiday illusions. They're here to have a good time. If he wants to spread the gospel of gloom-and-doom, perhaps he'd be better off finding something else to do.
PS (later addition) : If I'm endorsing yourr list, perhaps I should clarify that this is assuming it is just a little tongue-in-cheek.

Just a little but I would like a thoughtful debate.
I have known people be in Thailand for five minutes and claim great wisdom on Thai culture.
I have known people who have been there for ten years and claim, "I know Thailand, you don't!"
It is often said one should visit a country for three days or three months to get to know it?
Ten years is perhaps not enough for Thailand ?
I am probably sounding like 'Stickman' a bit now but I would like some considered opinions.
This poster's thread started me thinking because it was the fifth such story I had heard in a week !:-

At least another one can see I am being realistic and neither jokey or cynical.
If as VJ says I am talking out of my 'Ass' then why are those three books so popular ?
Checking in the brain at arrivals is a common activity then picking it up at departures.
