Get regular queries about calling the TG'friend from overseas, so include a few ideas, plus my interpretation of what her answer MAY mean ....
As you probably know, all incomming calls to a Thai mobile show caller number, unless you call from O'seas and have caller ID off - then the screen will show a blank, but this of course signifies it is from O'seas. Also if the TG has your name/number in her menu, it will show up, however, often - if using some off peak or cheap phone call systems, your call gets diverted thru a Thai number, which can confuse or catch your TG unawares. I would suggest that you occasionally change your point of call and the phone you use. Ideally you should call her at a fixed [662 for Bangkok] number, rather than a mobile - also,remember the REAL smart ones, have a different mobile for each Guy !
What the call/answer MAY mean ; No reply, phone switched off, - can just mean the system is overloaded, try a couple more times, if her phone is off, she may well be asleep, but unless she stays with her parents, and dosent want to annoy or wake them up - by and large TGs never turn the phone off.
Thai Guy answer .... ummmm well, she will ALWAYS say its her brother, sometimes this is actually true.
Answers immediately, little background noise - talks freely, plenty of "kittings" - I miss you etc, the best reply, probably out eating or something - and happy to talk to you.
Takes a while to answer, background music - probably been in a nightclub, had to go outside to take the call, - ask her where she is or why so long to answer, - will say she was in the toilet,- if admits to being in a club, OK at least she is being honest.
Answers immediately, but dosent say much - not so good, try to get her to say she loves/miss's you, sounds like she is with friends, and maybe dosent want to advertise you existance.
slow to answer, then complete silence ... NOT GOOD, she will say she was at home, or asleep, but normally in any Thai room/apartment, there is background noise, people talking, TV on, etc ... in this case, often the Girl is in a Hotel room, has grabbed the phone and gone off to the bathroom to answer / talk to you .....
just a few observations, no doubt members can add plenty more, but yes, vary your phone and the times you call, 2am Thai time is a good time to check, or 8am morning, and listen for the background noise !

I loved that! You are a tricky one. Since I generally don't give a fig who they're with or what they're doing I've never paid that much attention. Haven't called to Thailand in a while, since my phone went missing, but I remember one used to occasionally ask me where I was, and when pressed learned that her phone showed me calling from in Thailand. No wonder they don't trust us, either! Now I'll have to try this sometime just for fun.

one thing to add: if you are calling from overseas using a VoIP phone card, she will see a local BKK number as the caller ID...

Hey P'ripper, I thought you were more "farang" orientated than that - dosent the pessimistic outlook [ and deservedly I may add ] belong more with the battling ban nok rice farmer ? As to the post, just past on some thoughts, maybe not 100 % accurate - but the point is, most of the Guys involved are based oversea's, the is something you would not have experienced, called "Post Bangkok blues" - when the week after your holiday has ended, and your stuck in wet, cold, farang land - you have an urge to call every TG whose number you have !! - also its handy to have some idea what she really thinks, as by and large these converstaions are limited, especially if the TG speaks little English, and the Guy little Thai -
