Hi,
I have heard that Thai girls have different reactions to different nationalities. For example, I have heard that they overcharge Japanese people a lot, and, in general, adore Americans. I have also heard that they don't think much of Brits, and that Americans should say they speak 'American' rather than 'English'.
Does anyone know any more about their reactions to Brits (and, I am sure others would be intersted in their reaction to various nationalities). Is it Bangkok girls don't like us? Is this due to:
1) Historic reasons
2) A perception that Brits are pretty tight and tip nobody but taxis (whom they insist on paying 15%)
3) A perception that Brits are into S&M more than other nationalities.
4) A view that we are grumpy, cold, unfriendly bastards!
5) A lack of interest in getting UK nationality, ie we're ok but we don't have that 'extra' lottery ticket that goes with every American, ie the outside chance of a new life in the global capital of the world?
6) Something else - we all have bad breath but nobody's told us?
I'd be very interested in knowing about this, and any suggestings for overcoming any prejudices there may be (or maybe there are none?). If the prejudices are strong, and Brits risk high prices/second best women, does anyone know whether Thais can tell the difference in accents (I think I belong to the school of thought that states that if the girls have the right to tell white lies to get more out of us, then we have the right to reciprocate...

Hi,
As far as the Thai girls and Japanese are concerned, that could very well be true. As with Brits, I have known some Thai girls who like their British boyfriends, and I also know a few Brits who get on well with the Thai girls.
Most Thais are not able to tell apart different accents, however, it could be possible differentiate by mannerisms and physical appearances.

as a brit myself,i have never had any trouble with the girls.
i always go during low season and they are grateful for any man.
i find the girls may have a problem with a particular race/nationality because of a bad experience in the past.
my girl,Nok refused to have anything to do with american sailors after one of them took her and refused to pay her afterwards and another girl i know refused to go with swedes after she took a beating from one.
and i saw her injuries.
i think there may be various reasons why girls do not like certain men.

Another Brit here (sorry!).....nope, it's mainly about people - the way you behave is what counts. I've had plenty of 'khon dees' when I've answered that second question asked by generations of BGs ("where you come from"?). No prizes for the first question.
If the first thing you do when you go into the average bar is shove your hand up a girl's skirt or down her bikini bottom then you may get an embarrassed laugh but you're not going to be rated as polite or respectful. One of the charms of Thailand is the slow build-up when you're on the razz - just getting to know the girl and making that decision about whether she wants to go with you and you with her. With a few notable exceptions that have passed into nightlife folklore - arabs being the best example - the girls seems to have a pretty open mind on nationality unless they've had that bad experience. I always like to let it build slowly and let her make the first play touchy-touchy wise. Oh, and it does really help to smell good. Perhaps the jury's out on how you dress but smart casual is not a bad way to go. My impression is that fewer BGs smoke now than 10 years ago and while they tolerate it in the bar many will comment on how it makes their hair and clothes smell. So moderation here is not a bad policy. At the end of the day it really is about you and the way the girls see you.

I agree one hundred percent with you. Respect plays a big part in Thai culture and being respectful is very important.

Just follow GW's advice and you can't go wrong. Respect is what it's all about. And ofcourse smart casuals and a good aftershave helps too.

Based on my personal experiences I find that TGs and BGs CANNOT differentiate between Chinese, Japanese,Koreans and Vietnamese. The TGs/BGs always cannot guess correctly my race. Their first guess is 'Japanese', of which I am not.

Generally,BG not really care where u come from,if you look "falang".Newbie,u think too much about those "ladies".Someone that can hardly read and speak English,will not find out,where you from USA,UK,AU,NZ etc.I'm an Israeli,from European origin,they never know,even after I open my mouth.Come here,and pretend anything u want(if u like to).
