"Vast potential to be exploited

A recent survey by the National Economic and Social Development Board's (NESDB) northeastern office found that more than 15,000 women from the region had married foreigners (two of the 15 provinces have yet to be surveyed).

"They met their husbands while working to survive economically in Bangkok and in tourism towns like Phuket, Pattaya, Samui, Hua Hin and Udon Thani," the survey said.

"Annually, these women bring at least Bt40 billion in foreign currency into the country - about 6 per cent of the region's total GDP - through their present lifestyle, and they also visit Thailand at least once a year. It would be a lot more if we could make them visit more frequently or convince their husbands' relatives and friends to visit their homes too," Decha Vanichvarod, director of the NESDB's regional office said. "

After following the link to "Mia Farang" article, I got to read the above as final conclusion...
"Vast potential to be exploited..."
"They met their housbands while working to survive"
"Annually these women bring at least 40b baht..."
And they still dare to blame the "farangs" for the prostitution in Thailand, when it's Thailand itself that is taking advantage of these girls......seems to me that the same "agreement" made between the parents and the girls "send us money and you'll be a good girl" is been repeated to a higher level......and again, it's us, the farangs that are seen like cows to be milked!
Oh, by the way, after having been to the Caribbean (thanks Smeggy!) for the first time, I gotta say " Thailand, I love this Country!"

I think this puts the end of the nightlife business can go away and no affect Thailand arguement. 6% of GDP is nothing to sneeze at.

Is the article saying that those 15,000 women bring 40 billion Baht in forex into Thailand?

40,000,000,000 divided by 15,000 gives you about 2.7 million Baht per pussy married to farang.

While I do not doubt that many manage to send that amount of money to their families from abroad. It does seem excessive for an average figure. Considering how much the couple must spends itself and how much the stupid husband would let the girl send as a percentage of his income, the figure seems unrealistic to me. If the average huband makes US$ 150k/year before taxes, it means he allows the wife to send 50% of his after-tax income to Thailand?

Many of those farang husbands do not even make that much money themselves.

Oh! and 6% of Thailan'd's GDP (US$ 446 billion) would be 1,068 billion Baht. 40 billion Baht is more like 0.22% of GDP. The numbers are fishy. Correction: it is not Thailand, it is the region. Ok. Maybe then.

But lets look at the numbers again from another angle. If 40 billion Baht is 6% of that region economy, we can work the numbers and figure that the whole region represents only 4% of the Thai economy. So, 6% of 4% is not a great amount to make a central government change its ways.

P.S. 5555 Caronte, another one converted into a Caribbean fan!

My my my,

Let's see, if a Thai man marries a farang it's easy for her to become a Thai citizen but if a women marries a farang almost impossible for the husband to become a citizen. Thai Supreme Court just recently affirmed this inequity.

Government tightens up income requirements for farang husband fair number retired years ago and their pension income doesn't meet current standards. No grandfather clause. Thai government response; what me worry about family break up. Kick the fathers out!! 6% of the GDP mia farang.

The list could go on.

Those stats dont necessarily sound too screwy to me. As I understand it Isaan represents some 40% of the population but only accounts for around 10% of GDP (this was always an argument why AIDs wouldnt have a major impact on GDP). Bt40bn representing at least 6% of regional GDP sounds about right.

As Smegs points out the 15,000 girls bringing in this sort of cash is clearly a nonsense. However, it is the number of women that are involved rather than the total amount of income that is a problem. There are approximately 160k 'hookers' in Thailand working in the sex industry catering to farang (and another 600k working the Thai population). I would guess at least half (80k) come from Isaan and from what we know they may average around 2 sponsors each (not mention the STs and LTs).

In addition, you have many thousand (no idea how many) who are married abroad or 'working' abroad that are sending foreign currencies back to the region. (Anyone who has studied the Philippines economy will know that foreign currency receipts from Philippino workers, working abroad is a major contribution to GDP.)

So the total of Bt40bn of foreign currency receipts sounds about right. 20 million people in Isaan, 10 million women, 5% (or 500k) married or 'working' foreigners - each bringing in Bt80k (or around US2k to the region per annum). All sounds about right.

I have a bit of a problem with those figures.

1) Where did you get those figures. Last numbers that I remember seeing from one of "those serious" studies placed the numbers of active women working at a much lower figure. I have to look for it, but if my memory doesnt fail me it is less than 50% of your total figure.

2) Those demographic figures may also be warped. 5% of all females sounds a bit high. One third of the total population of Thailand are women between the ages of 15 and 64. Applying the same proportion to that region it would mean that there are 6.7 million women between the ages of 15 and 64. If you have 500k of them working, it means one out of 13 is into p4p or married to a farang. I may be wrong, but on first impression it seems high.

Yikes, for that kinda dough, I am beginning to understand why so many guys opt for sex changes here!

They need to get the stats on how many Issan women are outstandingly beautiful and what is it that causes this! If it is the water, I want to franchise it, bottle it, and send to about 100 countries.

If it works, it will outsell Viagra!

Smegs you could well be right - I 'read' a stat that there were 800k sex workers in Thailand with 20% working for the tourist industry.

Here a dubious internet reference claiming Isaan accounts for 33% of the population and 10% of total GDP.

http://www.asiaseed-institute.com/gmsseminar/khonkaenab.html

Still I think think these numbers add up...

1) 160k sex workers. Well we know that there are 10m tourists to Thailand each year. Lets say 20% are sex tourists and each sex tourist has an average of 5 girls - that makes 10m encounters. That works out at about 62 different guys for each hooker per year (excluding expats and MPs which presumably accrue to the locals). About right?

2) 1 in 13 women in Isaan either married to farang or involved in the sex trade with farang. Well in my experience of Isaan there arent that many pretty girls there so it is maybe not that unreasonable to reckon that a high proportion are in Bkk or elsewhere plying their trade. I also remember a survey conducted a couple of years ago which asked girls what profession they wanted to be in when they grew up - 18% said they wanted to be hookers!! So one in 13 doesnt sound too far off the mark.

3) Even the total income figure of Bt40bn looks ok to me. I mean tourism accounts for 6% of GDP - or US$26.7bn or Bt1070bn. To say that 4% of that ends up winding its way to Isaan doesnt sound unreasonable (especially as this figure wouldnt include Thai women abroad sending back monies to their families in Isaan).

Of course it is only 'lies, damn lies and statistics' but I do
think the numbers sound pretty plausible.
