Old timers and newbies alike hear it during the "conversation" - "I no tell Ma & Pa I work in bar, massage, etc. I tell them I work in restaurant, factory etc."
You meet a sweet thing. She is 19 & number three child in family of five children. Older brother is married. Older sister is married. Two younger siblings are in school and need money because Pa has broken leg and Ma sells som tum in front of home.
80% of Thailand has TV. Newspapers are read everywhere. Thais love to gossip as much if not more than most people the world over.
So when the money comes home, how can they possibly not know what the real source is??
In the above scenario, Pa would be about 50 and Ma about 45. They know plenty of people in their village and it is certain that some of the other 'daughters' were not working as angels.
Does anyone believe the parents really don't know?
And if they do know, would they really let the daughter continue to do this?

they pretend not to know because they prefer to have the money cumming in...
they have to accept the truth a little more "in the face" when they bring home a Farang for the first time, but still there's always some story about him being a co-worker or "friend of..."
but the money is in full flow, since the actual source is there to buy beer and whiskey for the relatives, and give the children tips to keep running to the shop to replenish the ice and beer...

Its all 'face'... They seem to prefer to be lied to and maintain a pretense of respectability than have the truth.. Very common.
Dont ever rely on directions given.. Not knowing something is seen as stupid.. So if you ask for directions and they have no idea they will probably make something up just to avoid the embarasment of seeming stupid !!!

In essence its the poverty trap equation very similar to the no money, no honey scenario or in this case no money no food, bill paid, etc. etc.
The parents usually know but second hand from a sister or brother so to a certain extent there is no confrontation and little loss of face for either the girl or the parents, inevitably this is not always the case but once the money gets home and economic pressure is eased to whatever level the girl contributes it becomes
a norm to receive it and once again the benefits often outweigh consequences.
However any parent would surely be upset but Thai's I find understand the often harsh realities that they face and put a brave face on things.
Of course, this is a generalisation but seems logical on the face of it, particularly if you take the poverty idea seriously.

Well I am going to say something now that will make me unpopular with the Thais, and expats that tend to put rural Thai culture on a pedastol.
I have done more than a few Isaan trips and went with my long term TGF (ex BG) up country a few times.
All the daughters of the village over 18 were off 'working' in the cities (I am sure some were not P4P but what % I have no idea) yet all the sons and males of the area were there sitting around all day drinking white whisky until they passed out and starting again over and over immaterial of what time of day or night they passed out or woke up.
I remember remarking to my girl that as it was midday and mid week do none of these people have jobs ?? Do none of them have ANY work ?? She said theat there was no work for them up there in Isaan !!!
It seems mighty convienient to me that you can not find any work or be prepared to go away and work and support your own family (these were not all old men but young guys too) yet let your sisters and daughters (and sometimes wives) head off to the city to sell themselves and maintain huge pressures on them to support the family.
From what I saw there it left a very sour taste in my mouth with the perception that daughters could be sent away to make the 'easy' money and the fathers and sons stayed around drunk non stop under the pretense of no work available for me.

I think it's the same type of denial/tunnel vision that foreigners get here in regards to their relationship with these girls. They see what they want to see.
And there is plenty of factory work for Issan boys AND girls. It's just a lack of work ethic that keeps the boys drunk and the girls on their backs.

Mark my words, he said pompously, I have stayed in Isaan for a fair amount of time, twice over 18 months, the post above, by LivinLos is very accurate and probably applies to my wife's family as well as 99 % of any other village in the NorthEast.
There will be a BIG problem, mee bpen haa lai lai, in the very near future. Toxin, by way of low interest loans to anybody and their Buffalo, has loaned money for pick-ups etc, waaaay beyond the average Chonabot's capability to repay. In a few months I predict a lot of defaults, when the Interst rate rises, as it will.
Will this rise be echoed in the cost of ST /LT by the sweet young Kon ban Nok's working as entertainers in Patts/Bkk/Hkt etc?
I'm pissed ( drunk) excuse long winded mindless post.
I give the floor to JHjr..............what do ya mean he aint here?
