Dear Forum, with the demos kicking off again do any of you guys on the ground see any impact on tourist over the holiday season? Started looking at booking my Jan hotels and saw some great deals then I see the headlines and wonder about waiting to see if the situation worsens and the hotel deals get better. Cynical I know but I work in all sort of dangerous places and will be traveling regardless.

Love it. I must remind the reader it's Thaksin in power now ( see red shirts win) The yellow shirt loyalists may have a general or two and monchary on side...but the prime minster has her brother....the king of corruption and know how... In all seriousness..... Thailand is never ever stable by nature. The place is a political basket case. I fly in in less than 48 hours..... Doesn't bother me. It won't affect you unless you go into those areas. If anything it thins the wolf pack considerably... Personally, I like it when they are full on at it.......makes for easy pickings and " Yes I can " retorts from girls looking for a trick. ::

I live in BKK... more than 12 years now, and remained during coup, demonstrations, curfew, burning of Ratchaprasong, what have you. Come. Unless all out widespread civil war threatens and massive evacs are underway, your holiday is unlikely to be affected. Thailand + prostitution is as reliably constant as the half-life of Uranium. Political protesters here concentrate their numbers in predetermined locations, widely publicized, to appear as big as possible. Much here in the media is made about how many pro- or anti-government protesters attend demonstrations and corresponding counter demonstrations, in relative terms... the one with the largest draw 'wins', regardless of absolute numbers. Even preceeding the 2010 riots, it was much as a tribal show of power, with a lot of 'display', but no blood, until (I believe) Thaksin's Red militants were ordered to start shooting. Even the arson and rioting in 2010 remained confined to designated no-go zones. Nana and Patpong closed, as they were on the red zone periphery, but Soi Cowboy remained opened. Holiday makers who remained in Thailand easily avoided the threat by going to venues outside of BKK... while there were a few ugly reports of robbery at some unauthorized upcountry checkpoints manned by drunk pro-Thaksin Reds, farang were (and are) not the enemy... there were generally no problems with transportation in and out of BKK, or knowing clearly where not to go. As I understood, even at the height of the 2010 riots the 'supply side' in Pattaya was only nominally affected, while the 'demand side' was notably down... restaurants, shopping, entertainment continued as normal. I read last night that anti-Thaksin Pitak Siam's numbers (about 10,000) did not reach critical mass. Their threat is likely to wither... they'll come back another day... but, not today. So bring it, men... leave the body armour in the locker. The only body armour you need to bring on this mission is very light weight... comes in a foil package.

In 2010 situation worsened to the point that some Mango girls wont come and join me at my appartment as I was "not so far" from the red shirts place....one morning I was awaken by the sound of AK47 firing in my street, and some of the neighbourg started putting plastic sheets over their door/windows to "avoid snipers"....it was not a fun time... Now I doubt it will become like this again, but TIT so we never now...

There is no threat. I was in the middle of it all, and with the generals all day at the anti-government demo. I was on stage most of the day taking pics. The tear gas incident happened when a group (not known who they were affiliated with) tried to break through a boundry set up by police to keep people away from government house. They rammed a truck into the concrete barriers, and then the police stopped them by firing tear gas, and made arrests. The second incident, and again the perpetrator's affiliation was not known, happened when a person sprayed one of the police in the face with pepper spray, and a group again tried to break through the barrier to get to government house. Another person at the same time slingshotted steel 5/8" nuts at the police, and hit them. The police fired tear gas at this point, and made arrests. None of this was instigated by the Pitak Siam group leaders. They were extremely upset over those doing this, and helped in getting them arrested. One of my observations, and I have pics from both sides, was the total lack of garbage on the protesters side. They kept the grounds spotless. On the police side was a different story completely. There was so much garbage on the ground it was hard to walk through. A plastic scrap collector would have made 2 years worth of collections on the police side in just 4 blocks. There were absolutely no trash bins, or arrangements for cleanup at all, not even a plastic garbage bag hanging anywhere. It was a pig stye on the police side everywhere. Eat lunch, and drop the remains where they stand, even those reenforcements behind the lines just dropped their trash where they rested. It was discusting to see such disregard for where they were, and the tons of thrash they left behind scattered everywhere.
