Official Trapped in Car After Computer Fails Mon May 12, 2003 09:43 AM ET BANGKOK (Reuters) - Security guards smashed their way into an official limousine with sledgehammers on Monday to rescue Thailand's finance minister after his car's computer failed. Suchart Jaovisidha and his driver were trapped inside the BMW for more than 10 minutes before guards broke a window. All doors and windows had locked automatically when the computer crashed, and the air-conditioning stopped, officials said. 'We could hardly breathe for over 10 minutes,' Suchart told reporters. 'It took my guard a long time to realize that we really wanted the window smashed so that we could crawl out. It was a harrowing experience.'

califdann ROTFLMFHO,great post. computer broke?,glad i live in a country where AC is not a regular thing. if hot wind the window down and open the sunroof, then easy to get out. i can never understand the American thing of keeping the windows wound up and then switching on the AC when hot. just open the bloody window.

"You've never been to Las Vegas in the summer, have you Nokna?" strange you should say that, because i have. "You need to come visit Philadelphia in august." been there, done that, got the T-Shirt. my experiences of the States are limited, trips to run Marathons in various big cities over the years, but in 1990 i visited my Uncle who lives in South Dakota during May,June,July and August. i drove from NYC to Sioux Falls and then we hired another car and spent 6 weeks driving all over the country, just taking each day as it came. it was hot in many places(Texas comes to mind)but i found that opening the window and allowing the wind to flow around the car was far better then A/C. but only an opinion.

Nokna: ŬI am in Saudi where the air temperature on the highway during the summer will be in the 160-180 degree farenheit range. ŬI have had air conditioning fail and opening the windows is the only option. ŬIt is not a fun option. Perhaps it is an American quirk but I see lots of Europeans with the windows rolled up and the A/Cs on.

I do not think it is an USA quirk. As the same behavior prevails in the rest of the world (except Europe) provided there is A/C available. I also like A/C to insulate me from noise and street dust/pollution. I think it is more an European quirk. Many people in Europe somehow have an absurd attitude towards A/C. I have many family members who live there. I have heard the most absurd things from some of them. Like "it is no good for your health to breathe so much A/C." I simply gave up with them. Want absurdity? Check the willingness of taxi drivers in Madrid to have the air condition on while the temp. outside is 35c. in July-August. Most will lie and say it is broken. Others will switch it on, but only on request. They prefer to go around sweating. They also think the A/C increases their fuel cost by huge amounts.
