So this is APEC. There are endless boring speeches on television and the
streets in downtown Bangkok are as quiet as I haven't seen them since
Songkran.

There is armed police at every Skytrain station now. At Siam Station
they even have one of those hand held metal detectors that they use at
airports. Sometimes helicopters are heard overhead, I guess that means
Emperor Bush is moving from A to B.

There is a police check point outside my soi tonight. I saw a man and a
woman being ordered out of a taxi and frisked by police. Another taxi
came with two Indian men, they rolled down the window and handed over
their passports before police had even asked. Police are interested in
taxies, presumably terrorists can't rent or steal any ordinary car? When
a lorry (that's a truck for you Americans) came I thought police would
be alarmed, it could after all hold at least five tons of explosives.
But they just joked with the driver and waved him on.

There will be no afternoon walking in Lumpini Park for me as Australian
Prime Minister J. Howard is going to jog there in absolute solitude.

The night market along Silom road has been gone since Friday. But there
are still touts and those boys who say "Sex CD DVD" to the few people
that pass by. I hear that the go-go bars are still open in Patpong but
that the dancers are made to wear more textiles than usual. There is not
a dog in sight. I saw one of my neighbours take a stray dog away in the
soi, I suppose he was going to hide it until APEC was over. I don't
believe the government is THAT effective in rounding up the dogs so
there must be a lot of them in people's gardens now.

It is peaceful in Bangkok during APEC. It is tempting to go out and
enjoy it, but many of the nice places are no-go zones, such as the
river, the Grand Palace area, the Sukhumvit hotel district and around
Siam Square. I would not like to go there even if they allow me, it is
uncomfortable thinking of all those snipers in the surrounding tall
buildings and all those plain clothes agents trying to pretend they are
not agents while they watch you. So I stay at home most of the time,
only going out to eat occasionally and hoping that my un-Arab appearance
will get me past the police checks once again.

Thais are not usually sarcastic, but when APEC is mentioned many of them
have a "yea right, big deal" attitude. They think that Thaksin & Co have
gone over the top in preparing for this meeting, they realise there is
nothing in it for ordinary people, and they are bored with all the fuss.
They don't complain though, this is how the big & powerful behave in
Thailand and they are used to it.

I have heard that John Howard vetoed the idea of closing Lumphini park for
his benefit.

Here in Huay Khwaang things are much the same as usual, a few more people at
home in the sois than usual today

I have also decided to stay home for most of the time during the APEC wank.

I *am* tempted to go out and try to get a glimpse of the barge (hae reua)
procession tonight. I saw a previous one,  it was a real spectacle and the
boat songs are magic! This one being at night will be even more spectacular.
However I'm sure it will be an obstacle course just to get anywhere near the
river.
It will be on TV so that is something.

Last night I started out for my usual Sunday night drive into Sukhumvit.....
I got down towards Asoke and soon realised it was going to be more trouble
than it was worth so I turned round and went home.

I have an old friend who went out there this Saturday.
I await his report.

I was in BKK until Sunday and also spoke to a bro in BKK today.  Although traffic restrictions have changed things a bit, he told me SC still had completely naked dancers in at least 2 go-gos as of last night.  NEP was rocking except for Carausel, which was closed with 3 officers in brown standing outside.

He also said FL'ers are going strong on Suk in the evening.

I was in cab heading back to my hotel (The President -right by Chit Lom SkyTrain station) and got stuck for 30 minutes waiting for Bush to drive by to his hotel.  Sum bitch.  The police wouldn't even let me use the sidewalk.

If this is the New Bangkok, I kind of like it. The beggars and their scumbag handlers are gone, the sidewalks are patched up and free of crap-merchants and there's more totty walking around than you can shake a stick at. Plus you don't have to shove 53 touts, motof_cks and assorted bottom-feeders out of the way to see it.

This, to me, is progress. Some may object that some of the charm is gone, but that sort of shit-house nostalgia doesn't get very far with me.

A clean, well-lighted place for whoremongering.
Paradise.

Hermanolobo,

You mentioned that there is not a dog in sight in the whole of Bangkok.

How about those restaurants which specialise in selling dog meat ? Are they all closed also because of APEC ?

If they are not closed, I think I know where they get their "supplies" from !!!!!!  That's why there are no dogs in Bangkok - they all end up in the cooking pots of those 'doggie restaurants' !!!!!!!

Just don't stray too far from the BTS. All too easy to get stuck in a jam for up to an hour as eveything stops for yet another f_cking motorcade. Allow a lot more time to get to the airport just in case.

Nearly all Bangkokians royally pissed off, but Thais more resigned than expats. Bars more or less as usual - especially at Cowboy.

Thank God, these APEC creeps will soon sling their hook and Bangkok will revert to the chaotic shambles we all know and love. Far less inconvenient than this ghastly Singapore-wannabe they're trying to show off. I like the bottom-feeders - they give the city its character.
