Heres an unwanted xmas present for all Thai lovers: Bangkok Post Xmas day headline: Nightspots may close at 1am to be decided on Monday and enforced as early as the chinese new year on Jan 22. http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/25Dec2003_news08.html Things are going from bad to worse in LOS. Alternative countries for my travels are becoming too attractive to resist. Looks like LOS social crusade may have pushed me over the edge.

Looks like they are seriously considering it. 1am closing. Gotta say till now I always figured that the whole crackdown thing would eventually melt away. Not so sure now.

I'm sorry, but bars closing earlier, at 1:00am (gasp), or even the rumored earlier time, at 10:00pm (double gasp), isn't that big a deal - heck, what do you do during the remaining hours of the day? Sit in your room playing solitaire, waiting for 2:00am? Seriously, until the bars close entirely (unlikely) it's not even a topic up for discussion - there's plenty else to do in BKK otherwhise (so I've heard). Aside, will that affect the closing time of the MPs? Harry

Hzink, The point is that a stand must be taken by tourists or thais against the earlier closing times otherwise the eventual closing of these bars will be inevitable. Besides which earlier closing times will mean less time for bars to sell their wares meaning an increase in prices of drinks etc to account for the loss in trading time imposed by the earlier closing. The Thai govt seems to believe that the earlier closing times will bring about a reduction in drugs, underage drinking etc...exactly how is this going to work? What is the Thai govts justification for the move other than to limit the profit that the entertainment venues are making. Does Thaksin believe the entertainment industry is a threat to his leadership for example? The timing of this announcement is also particularly suspect. News of the govts intentions are revealed on xmas day when most of Thais tourists and the worlds eyes are focused on the celebration of xmas. A lot of tourists to Thailand in 2004 are going to be very surprised to learn that the country they are visiting has one of the most strict bar closing time laws in most of the world.

I have had some satisfaction with the following concept: 1) I have dinner with colleagues between 20H-- and 22H00. 3) I pick up a girl in a Bar I love and cherish by 23H00 4) I take her to a BAR - The MINIBAR in my hotel from 23H00 and 24H00 5) We shower and make love between 24H00 and 01H00 6) We make love between 03H30 and 03H40 because one of us turned in bed and the other one wakes up 7) More lovemaking at 09H00 - 10H30 8) Girl leaves, a new day starts So with this approach the closing times become almost irrelevant

power24............"The point is that a stand must be taken by tourists...." Well, in what country do tourists have the right to suggest that they can advise a nation's government on the social order best suited for the citizens of that country? Yours perhaps? ........"A lot of tourists to Thailand in 2004 are going to be very surprised to learn that the country they are visiting has one of the most strict bar closing time laws in most of the world........." For Thailand to be even be remotely as limited in it's P4P possibilities, (that's what your really talking about) as other countries is hilarious. There is Thailand...and then there is the rest...period. This whole thing has been discussed to death on other threads.....2:00a.m. closings were supposed to kill off the whole of LOS, etc., etc. Have a read of etc., etc. and you will see you have basically said the same thing.

power24 Personally, I can't think of anything more likely to be completely counter-productive than farang barflies 'taking a stand' on anything. Foreign sex tourists are tolerated in LOS. No more than that. This whole 'social order' thing, idiotic as much of it is, isn't really aimed at tourists at all. Believe it or not, the whole of Thailand doesn't revolve around the farang-oriented P4P scene.

Im not suggesting that the whole of Thailand revolves around p4p, however 'tourism' is vital to thai economy. Who is the social crusade aimed at? Ive yet to hear a rationale argument for the thai govt doing what its doing... When I said 'Taking a stand' I meant this as in tourists choice of destination for holidays. You are correct that this may be detrimental to the p4p scene fair enough but 'sex' tourists and 'normal' tourists alike will no doubt be disuaded from a trip to LOS whether this is good for Thailand or not and whether I think this is a good idea or not. With surrounding countries like Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam becoming more value for money, open and attractive to tourists, hardened tourists to Thailand may see the increased drinks prices, supression of entertainment venues and earlier closing times as negative aspects of a visit to LOS. In light of inreased competition by surrounding countries, I would have thought that Thailand would be looking at ways of raising its game of attractiveness to tourism and not lowering it. By stating these points Im simply trying to explain how a lot of farangs will portray this change in govt attitude. From what I have seen and read about the change in law to 2am closing has had a detrimental effect on the p4p and general tourism in Thailand. The posts referred to suggested that 2am closing was the first step in many towards changing the type of tourism in Thailand but for what other reasons I still dont understand. Im trying to say that a country like Thailand whose economy prospers partially because of its tourist industry should at least 'in part' take its tourists opinions into consideration when making governmental policies which may effect the tourism industry. This seems sensible business sense doesnt it? Do Thais want these changes in closing times or just the govt?

Many Thais, not associated with the p4p industry, are strongly critical of it, and of the negative image it portrays of their country, for which they have a very nationalistic fervor, as much so or more so than any other. I have talked with Thai women who are livid, that in their perception, farangs and the world press therefore equates all Thai women as easy marks. Some of them, believe it or not, are even in the tourism industry. When I point out the loss that would bring to tourism, they are resolute that it would be a worthwwhile loss.
