Two great stories that have been under the radar, so far.

Can it be there's a sliver of light through all the early-closing doom and gloom?

Chuwit to run for governor
"Two chicks in every tub," Soapy Baron promises!

Published on Jan 3, 2004

Massage-parlour tycoon Chuwit Kamolvisit thrust himself back into the limelight this week by announcing that he would run to be Bangkok's next governor.

Chuwit told The Nation that he intended to run for the city's top job and was currently assembling his election team. "I will be Thailand's Arnold Schwarzenegger," he said, referring to California's improbable new governor.

Months after exposing a web of bribery and corruption in the ranks of the police, the red-light entrepreneur is now the leader of his own First Thai Nation Party. Chuwit said he would officially announce his candidacy and policies in the next few months.

Chuwit, who has 11 pending court cases against him, issued a warning to his enemies that raised doubts about his real intentions.

He would target any candidates who have a conflict with him, he said, suggesting that he may use the election to continue fighting the officials who want him jailed.

Some members of his election team might come from the team of former governor Bhichit Rattakul, he added.

Purachai won't run for city governor
"Too few lives to run and ruin," killjoy cries!

Published on Jan 12, 2004

Deputy Premier Purachai Piumsombun has decided not to contest the city's gubernatorial election this year, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra confirmed yesterday.

Purachai prefers to continue working in the national government, said Thaksin, who is also leader of the Thai Rak Thai Party.

Recent surveys showed Purachai, widely praised for his social-order campaign while serving as interior minister, would be among the favourites if he ran.

A party source said that after realising that Purachai would not run, TRT's Bangkok MPs set their sights on Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan. Both Purachai and Sudarat are TRT deputy leaders.

In the previous gubernatorial election in 2000, Sudarat came second, losing to veteran politician Samak Sundaravej.

Governor Samak, who has ruled out seeking a second term, is set to complete his term in July. An election is expected a month or two later.

The premier also said yesterday that the TRT's candidate in the gubernatorial election would need to be someone he could work with.

"I must be able to tell him what to do so that he can help me with the work. If I can't order him, I won't be able to solve Bangkok's problems. It's because [the city administration] is an independent agency," Thaksin told reporters during a break from a golf game.

He said that to effectively perform his or her duty, a Bangkok governor needed government support, particularly for large, expensive projects.

Thaksin expressed confidence city voters would support anyone running under his party's banner.

The rival Democrat Party was a step ahead in the race after it announced last week that TA Orange chief executive Apirak Kosayodhin would be its candidate.

Democrat spokesman Ong-art Klampaiboon said yesterday that it appeared the TRT had difficulty finding a suitable candidate after Purachai decided not to run.
