Scores injured in Thai bomb blast

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/3574731.stm

A bomb blast outside a bar in southern Thailand has injured about 30 people.
Most of the injured - in Sungai Kolok, a town on the border with Malaysia - are believed to be Thais and Malaysian tourists.

The motorcycle bomb exploded around 1930 (1230 GMT) in the parking lot of the Marina Hotel, police said.

The area has been under martial law since an armed raid in January on an army camp sparked violence that has left more than 50 people dead.

The Nation in this report says 27 were injured, 20 of them female employees of the two bars hardest hit by the explosions.

Basically, they've blown up the bargirls.

Like so many others I'm now numb to this sort of thing, particularly the way it is reported breathlessly in the local press.

"Scores inured to Thai bombast"?

Just imagine if incidents like these put the girls off from working in the bars for good. That would be terrorism of the worst kind.

Personally, I can't think of anything of anything scarier.

Is that all you think about JHolmesJR?
Terrorism is all around us and making many people frightened and all you think about is whether it will stop girls working so you can get your pussy?
Or was it tongue in cheek?

At the end of the day, it's all that really matters, as it's all that really affects us.

Trust me, and I would hate the agree with JHjr, but in this case, I do

This time the bomb is packed in a motorcycle parked at the Marina car park

Bomb Outside Bar in Thailand Injures 30

BANGKOK, Thailand - A bomb attached to a motorcycle in a Hotel parking lot
exploded Saturday in southern Thailand, injuring about 30 people, according
to police and hospital workers.

Three of those hurt were in serious condition after the blast in Sungai
Kolok, a town on the border with Malaysia, said police Capt. Pibul
Wattanatham.

The bomb exploded at about 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Marina Hotel,
injuring patrons at the Top Ten bar and coffee shop, said Pibul.
Most of those hurt were Malaysian tourists, according to a worker at the
local hospital.

Three southern Thailand provinces are the only ones with Muslim majorities
in Buddhist-dominated Thailand. Officials have blamed the violence on Muslim
separatists, although no groups have taken responsibility for it.

Thai Muslims have long complained of discrimination in jobs and education by
the central government. They also say their culture and language are being
suppressed.

A decades-old separatist movement in the south was contained in the late
1980s, but violence began to resurface two years ago.

Thailand assesses tourist bombing

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/3578075.stm

The bomb was the first attack on a tourist target in the recent unrest.

Thailand's prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, has called an urgent meeting of his security ministers after a bombing in the country's south.
The explosion outside a bar in a tourist town in the province of Narathiwat near the Malaysian border wounded 29 people on Saturday.

Mr Thaksin cancelled a trip to Germany and Hungary because of the attack.

More than 55 people have been killed in the mainly Muslim region after an upsurge of violence since January.

Martial law remains in force in the three southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala.

The government said after Saturday's bomb that the violence was reaching "a crucial stage and had arrived at a turning point."

The bombing was the first attack on civilians since violence broke out in Thailand's Muslim south in January.

Malaysian concern

The explosion tore through a karaoke bar in the town of Sungai Kolok, and ten Malaysian tourists were among the wounded.

On Monday the Malaysian defence minister, Najib Razak, said he was "very concerned" over the attack and said Malaysia would fully cooperate with the Thai authorities.

The BBC's correspondent in Kuala Lumpur said that the bombing had shocked Malaysia.

Malaysians have been warned to cross the border with Thailand only if absolutely necessary.

Violence erupted in Thailand's Muslim south after a raid on an army arsenal by unidentified gunmen that left four soldiers dead on 4 January.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a governing party member of parliament, Najamudeen Umar, on suspicion of involvement in the raid.

The unrest has been blamed on Islamist separatists in the south who the government fears may have combined forces with international networks.

A series of attacks have mostly targeted policemen, officials, and village leaders.
