I was in the BTS a moment ago and saw a huge column of black dense smoke.... seemed to be about... south of Rama IV... probably near the Sathorn area. Anybody knows anything?

I've heard that it is a building on Soi Suan Plu (but not Park Suan Plu). I can't see the building from my office but I can see the smoke which has been going since about 1.30. Fire department sirens have been heard in the Sathorn area since lunchtime. Anyone with more specific information?

Just talked with my GF standing in a phone booth at Soi 16 (near Rama IV) and said she saw a big column of smoke. Behind the police station of Sun Phlu? I hope Tim's OK! Maybe he has set himself on fire! BTW Incredible that the FT already picked up the story and Thai newspapers haven't updated their frontpages yet.

My info says same. Soi Suan Plu. See a lot of smoke from my roof top terrace. Many sirenes for the last hours. Sorry, no more specifics.

TV news reports that a police apartment block and 700 slum houses have gone up in smoke. They may be exaggerating, but the footage looked pretty spectacular.

It looks fukking huge http://wwwi.reuters.com/images/w148/amdf546480.jpg From the BBC website: "Fire rages through Bangkok slum A massive fire has broken out in a poor neighbourhood of Thailand's capital, Bangkok, forcing residents to flee into the streets with their belongings. The BBC's Kylie Morris in Bangkok says the slum area is located near a wealthy neighbourhood, housing many embassies - no damage to these has been reported. Some 200 two-storey wooden houses were ablaze, local radio said. There is no word on any casualties so far, but fire trucks and emergency vehicles are arriving at the scene. Cause unknown They were having trouble reaching the source of the blaze because the slum's narrow lanes were crowded with belongings salvaged by residents, Reuters news agency reports. (I am not surprised. TIT) Eyewitnesses said the flames looked very large, but were confined to a relatively small area. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen above the Tungmahamek shanty town, near the Sathorn Road business district. The cause of the blaze is not yet known"

Have to agree, looking at ITV, this does not look pretty. Looks Bad, Bad. And this will not stop before the whole slum is gone.... But replacement accomodation will probably be build at this spot..... what condominiums are being planned in this area? Minimum ourchase price 1.9 M. B?
