I am free to speak on this topic once again as the law office with which I am associated is NOT involved. A certain Thai lawyer named Sukij (already on probation and at rsik of losing his license) is lying about being the "chief attorney" of our office, and he's the one handling this case for the defense, and is associated with "Seh Daeng", aka Major General Khattiya. Recently fired from ISOC.  (Internal Security Operations Command, Ministry of Defense).

It is sad but true that these two were in fact introduced to each other by the head of our firm, Prof.Bhoonsak Wanabongse, who now rather wishes he hadn't.

From this morning's Bangkok Post:

SUKHUMVIT SQUARE DEMOLITION

All 129 raid suspects freed, another wants to surrender

Out on bail as they await court hearing

Wassana Nanuam

The man accused of directing the attack on Sukhumvit Square, Lt-Col Himalai Phewphan, has been released on bail.

Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawadipol, an army specialist, said all 129 suspects who allegedly took part in demolishing the square were also granted bail.

He added he submitted the bail request for Lt-Col Himalai who was freed first along with 14 other suspects who were military personnel. The rest were released later.

Lt-Col Himalai surrendered to police after being charged with causing public disorder and damage to private property. He was detained on Feb 11.

Since his release, he has kept a low profile as he prepares to fight the case in court. His alleged involvement in destroying the square led to his being suspended from military duty.

Lt-Col Himalai denied any role in the incident in which shops and beer bars in the entertainment strip were bulldozed to the ground.

Police said they had evidence that military personnel hired as security guards at the square were responsible. Lt-Col Himalai managed the firm contracted to guard the square and was accused of directing the attack.

Maj-Gen Khattiya said Maj Thanthep Thammathorn of the army reserve unit, another square-raid suspect still at large, had contacted him saying he wanted to turn himself in.

Maj Thanthep had gone into hiding in a southern province. He now wished to surrender next week on condition that he was guaranteed release on bail, said Maj-Gen Khattiya.

Would this be normal in a case like this for all the suspects to be
out on bail? Do you know the bail set?
I never used to visit this area and I am now sorry I never did. It
seems to have given a lot of people pleasure and a living for many
others.
PM Thaksin is reported by the press to see this case resolved.
Will that make any difference?
Was Clinton Plaza used as some from of precedent?
Is this type of behavior usual in Thailand or is this at this level
something new.
Will the rule of law prevail??

No, I don't know the amount of bail, probably very low.

You can tell when Thaksin is lying by when his lips are moving.

The real powers in this case are TIPCO and friends, the landlords. They wanted the tenants out, they're out. The little guys who did the demolition, are pawns. Thaksin's sole interest is co-opting the "military Mafia" to his own ranks. Does he care about the farang or Thai squatters who had no lease and no licenses and improper zoning? NO.

And who do you reckon MG Khattiya is? Up till a few months ago he was a "specialist" in ISOC, would you care to speculate? Wetwork, that's what. He is most famous for the Thai Rath (newspaper) bombing a decade ago.

The Clinton Plaza thing as I understand it was a matter of Sofitel (French hotel group) wanting the space.

Disputes between poor rural tenants and landlords are often resolved by arson, so an urban demolition is relatively mild.

There are two kinds of law in Thailand that talk loud: gun law and money law. Sad but true. One Thai euphemism for a hired killer is a "Petchburi judge" or a ".45 caliber lawyer".

Yugh! This is SO Third World !
Plus Áa change plus Áela meme chose!

>"No, I don't know the amount of bail, probably very low."

When I attended Thai court for a civil case some local farmers were hauled out of jail to appear before his honour the beak. They had been dealing in Yah-Baa. Sitting there with bare feet and chains around the ankles bail was set. 800,000Baht. Back to Jail.
Sometimes I think life reminds me of a game of Monopoly?

>"You can tell when Thaksin is lying by when his lips are moving."

Yes! Dodgy ex-policman with a load of money!
Ex-pats and some Thais tell me that he is doing his best so give him a chance?
People tend to vote for the nice man in the suit. Style over content wins every time !
I wonder if that Boeing B737-400 that burnt out at Don Muang just before 'his-nibs'
boarded was really an electrical fault near a fuel tank? Coincidence? Don't believe in it myself.

>"Wetwork, that's what."
Wet ops! I see a Russian democrat MP(Sergei Yushenkov) has just been shot! Critical of (Ras)-Putin.
I hope they are not going back to their old ways. Otherwise my nightmare may come true.
The Late General Alexander Lebed(As straight and honourable as a politician can be?) allegedly died in a helicopter crash. He was threatened with legal action after he revealed a significant number of 'suitcase' nuclear weapons could not be accounted for.
I believe we are entering a time like the 1930's. Deep depression. A major war is not likely to break out at a time like this. When the depression is over and things are turning up again then the danger of World war III may appear. You can sip your beer till 2012AD before any major conflict. Often an unpopular war is a signpost of dire economic times. Iraq was very unpopular in many quarters. I have often said the war is about oil. It is probably more about economy.
Peter the Great said that the Russ should go South always South!
Maybe the four US air bases may stop the Russian washing their boots in the Indian Ocean?
Remember all those books in the 1980's with the Soviets lauching a tank assault across the Fulda Gap(Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy for one.) Clancy never tought they'd go south.Although his Iceland scenario actually changed NATO thinking at the time !!!

>"There are two kinds of law in Thailand that talk loud: gun law and money law."
The Italian banker Franco Calvi who was found hanging under Blackfiars Bridge in London- (an alleged suicide)would often recommend the reading of 'The Godfather' by Mario Puzo.
He said,"Read this book because that is the way the REAL World works!"

>"You can tell when Thaksin is lying by when his lips are moving." = Again?
I was shown another forum- 'Nana something or other' where there seemed quite a bit of paranoia about talking politics. They feared the Thai 'Net-Police' would give them grief? I only posted once and said the only grief they would get would be from the Thai 'Fashion-Police' so throw away those shorts,lip-flops and get rid of that beer-belly!

Bangkok LOOKS First World. Shopping Centres, skyscrapers etc etc.
But is it??
Will the SUKHUMVIT SQUARE DEMOLITION Ýbe a one-off and Thailand gets away from the mafia past?
Just keep thinking about the words of Franco Calvi - "Read the Godfather!"
Plus Áa change, plus Áela meme chose! Are you listening Mr Putin ?

Oh Mr Putin
What am I to do?
I thought I'd get Democracy
And all I got was you!

H.Lobo,
Your remark "some local farmers were hauled out of jail to appear before his honour the beak" was like one of those wonder pills that bring back memories to an amnesiac. It instantaneously took me back at least 35 years to when I last heard that word "the beak" used. We used it in school to refer to the headmaster, picking it up from Billy Bunter. Thank you, Herr Lobo!!

Happy memories come flooding back,
Full of laughter and fun,
I know now what we all lack,
It's that bit of shine from the sun

Just a small point, not to start a war:

'Hermie' said :

"The Americans on this forum being as usual 'educationally challenged' don't know the Spanish and use the term Herman or Hermie. "

As one American, who admittedly last studied French in 1966, I at least know that in the following mis-quote, also by 'Hermie', 'Áela' should be 'c'est la':

"Plus Áa change plus Áela meme chose!" ->
"Plus Áa change plus c'est la meme chose!"

Please refrain from American bashing, Hermanolobo.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled banter.
