Used car saleswoman crowned Thai Miss Spinster 2004

BANGKOK (AFP) - A 33-year-old used car saleswoman has been crowned Thailand's Miss Spinster 2004, saying that her victory should convince other "old maids" to stand proud.
The Miss Spinster competition is one of the staples of the kingdom's colourful beauty pageant obsession which includes the likes of Miss Jumbo, Miss Transsexual, Miss Fruit and Miss Thailand.
Having clinched the winning tiara, as well as the best-skin and evening gown categories, Chompoonuch KamnerBKerd told AFP her victory was a win for all of Thailand's self-made single women.
"My victory shows that us single women can win success if we have knowledge and ability. We can survive," said a relaxed Chompoonuch, who also sells cosmetics part-time.
Chompoonuch beat 29 women -- who had to be 28 or older and never married -- late Tuesday to win a 300,000 baht (7,500 dollar) tiara among other prizes including life insurance.
Event organiser Parasada Baholyodhin has said the sole aim of the pageant was to empower the kingdom's so-called old maids, who she said were under-appreciated by men who "think women aged over 30 are old".
Thailand hosts more than 30 pageants every year. Sociologists say the craze is based on an obsession with the entertainment industry and a desire to be part of it.
Many former Miss Thailand entrants have gone on to become actors and even a newsreader, but only a handful of contestants from the more colourful shows have managed to score in the entertainment world.
While this year's Miss Spinster said she had mainly entered "for the experience" she conceded a shot at the limelight had been a partial motivation.
"I hope to join the entertainment industry if an opportunity were to open," said Chompoonuch.

Over there in LOS, a girl is on the shelf with little prospects of marriage to a Thai guy after she's 30 presumably. So the 31 year old that I'm meeting from the dating site in just under a month, falls into this category. The 26 year old that I'm meeting the week after, still has a little time on the clock, but it is running out fast, eh?
As a 55 year old, I had always considered these girls to be in their prime still, as things have moved on in the West, with girls often establishing a career first before marriage nowadays.
I had considered the 26 year old to be especially young, but how do the experienced Bros view how she might be perceived by Thai guys age wise, or how would she view her own prospects at that age? I'd be pleased if anybody could give me an insight into this.

In the small villages in Northeastern Thailand, many girls are married at 15 and they become mother at 16 or 17. So, a 30-year old girl could easily be a grand-mother (some are). By Thai standards up country, a 26-year old lady is not exactly old, but "mature"...
My thai wife thinks that her father is already an old man (he's 51!!!). But don't forget also that (if I am not mistaken) the average life expectation is only 69-year-old in Thailand.
