"...Flash flooding in Indonesia has claimed almost 100 lives, and many more deaths are feared in Thailand after huge waves hit the popular tourist resort of Phuket. Government officials say Thailand's toll is already above 50.
At least 14 people are missing in Phuket, where witnesses described "walls of water" as high as 30 feet (10 meters), flooding the streets, absorbing taxi cabs and other vehicles.
One witness said Laguna Beach, where many of the island's major resort hotels are located, was "completely gone."
Thailand's government has evacuated 10,000 people from southern Thailand and declared a state of emergency...
...CNN correspondent Aneesh Raman in Bangkok said eye-witnesses spoke of a "wall of water" bearing down on the beachfronts of the popular resort of Phuket as at least two waves struck.
Raman said Thai officials were evacuating 10,000 people from the area, and there reportedly was "untold devastation"...."

"..."Everything was washed away except two large hotels on Phi Phi Don island," the officer said after speaking with a Phi Phi resident by telephone.
Reuters reports that more than 100 tourists on diving holidays are missing on islands off southern Thailand following Sunday's tsunamis, about 70 of them in the famed Emeral Cave, a tourist official said.
"We don't know whether they are dead or alive," the official told Reuters from the southern city of Trang...."

Ugly.... very ugly.
I live on a klong (25 miles from the Gulf of Thailand) and about 8:30 this morning the water in the klong began to "surge" up and down... not waves (the water surface was dead flat) but up and down... probably 10-12 inches. I thought "holy shit... something big must have hit the water somewhere..."
The pulse from the quake was so great that it impacted the klongs and rivers all over Central Thailand. The quake exceeded 9 on the Richter scale, and is being called on of the 5 strongest ever recorded.
There may be some opportunities to contribute to the relief efforts, but at this point there is nothing that can be done until the damage is assessed and needs are determined.

Seriously, this is a bummer, the news say this is one of the largest earthquakes in history. I stayed at the Tropicana bungalows off Bangla several times, anybody know if it got washed away?

Chaotic quakes will someday change the way we live or I should say where we shouldnt be living.
High stable ground mates or im just gonna ride the wakes out with my jet ski.

Don Muang is just packed with tourists going out. No problem, as far as I know.
