Found this story today: http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=66782005 To quote: TSUNAMI-struck Thailand has been told by the European Commission that it must buy six A380 Airbus aircraft if it wants to escape the tariffs against its fishing industry. While millions of Europeans are sending aid to Thailand to help its recovery, trade authorities in Brussels are demanding that Thai Airlines, its national carrier, pays £1.3 billion to buy its double-decker aircraft. I suppose it's always easier to make a sale at gunpoint... buy our aircraft.. or else. I wonder how many other orders of the 149 confirmed for the Airbus A380 where achieved this way??

During the first gulf war, the USA made a deal with Saudi Arabia, that in return for military aid, the Saudi’s would renew there airline fleet with US made planes. Accordingly, after the war, Saudi purchased a load of B747/400’s, B777/200’s and MD90’s. What comes around goes around. Both Boeing and Airbus play these games, and both complain about the other when they loose. As long as they get you to where you want to go, is it important if it is an Airbus or a Boeing.

They ordered them last summer. I think the Thai government is now coming under pressure from the US to renege on the deal and buy Boeing instead. More to do with the current illegal blocking of shrimp imports to the US and so-called 'intellectual property' rights than a distant threat from the EU.

Ridculous EU propaganda. If that were true, why didn't the US just give the aid directly to Boeing since it would be a lot cheaper? The funny thing about the shrimp import thing, is that the EU is not even a shrimp producer, so no one in the EU is even being damaged by dumping shrimp at low prices.

Did Boeing need military aid then? The EU does produce shrimps, Norway being the main shrimp producing member state. The current EU tariff on Thai fish imports is a massive 12%, whilst that champion of free trade values, the US, only insists on a more reasonable tariff of 97%. It's amazing what you can pick up by actually reading the article thats linked at the start of the thread As for this Airbus deal, the sad thing is that its only in the aftermath of such a tragic event as the tsunami that these kinds of strong arm tactics are viewed with disgust. Unfortunately blackmail policies like these make up the mainstay of international politics, and there isn't a single western nation that is blame free be they EU members, the US or anywhere else. The richer nations are always going to shaft the less well off states, thats how they stay the richer nations.
