Briton has Throat Cut in Thailand Attack

A British man was found murdered in Thailand with his throat slit, police said today.

The body of Bernard Le Court, 52, a chef from Liverpool, was found in roadside bushes near the tourist resort of Pattaya, 40 miles south of Bangkok.

A taxi driver has been arrested on suspicion of killing Mr Le Court to rob him to pay off a gambling debt.

Police Major Kataphol Somnuek, said: “He died after his throat was cut deeply by a knife.”

The victim’s money, camera and video camera had been stolen.

Police arrested a taxi driver who is suspected of killing Le Court after picking him up in Pattaya on Tuesday night and allegedly robbing him to pay the debt, Maj Kataphol said.

His body is in hospital awaiting an autopsy by Thai authorities.

He has a twin brother, Michael, who is also a chef in Thailand and recently married in the country.

Both brothers are from Liverpool and are believed to have sold-up to live and work in Thailand.

Thai police said the attack almost severed Mr Le Court’s head and also caused extensive injuries to his chest, arms and hands.

They said that, although robbery was the probable motive, they found more than £70 in local currency in the victim’s trouser pockets.

The Foreign Office would not confirm the victim’s details as all his next-of-kin in the UK have not yet been informed of the tragedy.

The suspect faces the death penalty if found guilty of murder under Thai law.

But this type of incident is quite rare here. Compare Thailand to another impoverished nation, like Brazil, where you wouldn't care to wear a gold necklace or ring in public, to put things in perspective. Let's just hope this remains a rare, isolated incident, that can even happen in Thailand.

The foreign office wouldn't confirm the identity because his family hadn't been told but the scotsman went and published it anyway - thats f***ing good of them.

Extra anguish for the family if the FO don't get there first and imagine if the ID is wrong.

For sure one need to be a higly trained police Major to do such a declaration...
Remind me of a declaration of a Firemen a few years ago : "Deathly dead the man died soon after arriving hospital"

Another pleasant Brazilian trick is to hoop the victim with car tyres and then set light to him/her.

This happened to an important member of a Samba School recently. Money and jealousy. I would love to visit Brazil but have heard far too many stories about dodgy goings on.

I think this type of incident is very slowly on the rise in Thailand as well ?

Yes. Didn't I read somewhere that was because it was then nigh on impossible to identify the remains?

I spent 3 months travelling in Brazil. Never had any real problems apart from pickpockets in salavador. It's certainly far more agressive than asia, but if you stay smart it shouldn't put you off a trip.

Very old SA trick -- called a 'necklace' -- particularly favoured by members of Mandela Utd, Mrs Mandela's little club.
