In the Bangkok Post today Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra wants young garland vendors to play a role in tackling city traffic problems. Instead of running around the city's busy streets, the children could be selling expressway coupon booklets at toll plazas, he said. Apart from easing traffic congestion at toll plazas, the scheme is likely to improve the quality of life of the children, he said. The young participants will get a commission fee of two baht per booklet and accident insurance coverage. The prime minister has urged interested children to register with the traffic centre at Government House between Sept 12 and 16. After receiving training, which will take place from Sept 19 to 23, the children will start working on Oct 3 during the morning and late afternoon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- With the world concern about exploiting children, and the labour laws that concern them, it's nice to see another exploit attempt condoned by a government. This should raise a good stir with the PM's opponents.

Gee what a great idea Quote Instead of running around the city's busy streets, the children could be selling expressway coupon booklets at toll plazas, he said. Quote Sure until in a effort to make more money the kids start selling them in the middle of the streets while the traffic is paused for a second. Then end up getting killed while trying to make a buck. bimmher

Yes, I particularly like the 'accident insurance' thrown in... Well, regarding child (and also animal) exploitation, Thailand is already pretty f***ed up... BTW Who is cashing al the money?

No Thaksin is just a very good PM. In Holland we have the saying : To govern is to look ahead. Well Thaksin is doing just that. He sees a problem (trafficjams) and he tries to solve it in the root. Children will grow up as future car and tuktuk owners. So that means more trafficjams. And what is more cost effective then letting the problem solve it self. So in bringing the children and the traffic together he is trying to put a cap on the future carowners. So he is bringing wealth now by solving problems in 10 - 15 years time. I wish I had such a PM.

Here's an interesting questions: What would YOU do, to solve the problem of child exploitation, or rather, of children running around selling garlands (you're not going to solve child exploitation, so don't even try). No fantasy solutions, but real ones, taking Thaiand's conditions into consideration.

You heard from Gyaos! I think the Prime Minister's decision is correct. Where else are the kids going to go, Harvard University? With the kids registered, trained and rotated, the kids will go to, or be encouraged to go to, better schools, after their work commitment and increase the wealth of the country. And who's going to buy the books? Taxis, for faster future rides for clients through those tolls. Of course, I take the A100.

Also, for those of you condemning Thaksin's suggestion (or, ridiculing it) - considering there are a lot more people interested in expressway coupons, than in cheesy garlands and chicklet gums, so there's a real possibility of the kids making a guaranteed higher income (or at least, revenue), than they are doing right now, fouling up other plazas, and trying to hock stuff no one wants. Also, the key in this operation seems to be in registration of these kids, as that allows a far greater level of control, than having them run wild. It *sounds* like an idea that's not really that shabby -- but of course, the question will be to see how it will be implemented, and what the results will be. In the meantime, where are those far better solutions by koolbreeze and the other critics... I'm certain there's better ways to deal with this, right?
