http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4380820.stm It's selfish but I actually dislike seeing this stuff as I've had my leave plans to Thailand squashed due to the original Bali bombing. WTF does Bali have to do with Thailand? I don't know but Malaysia, Indoneisa, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanamar all went to the same force protection level "Charlie" immediately after the bombing took place. And most military commanders used that as a basis to forbid travel to those countries for a while. Unwarranted overkill to be sure. I guess Australians are immune to SE Asian influences since their FP Con stayed the same.

Cat, And you say you are in the Military?? The same group that bombed Bali is supporting the trouble in the South of LOS, the Trouble in Mindanao, and the security alerts around Singapore. The JI is dedicated to restoring the SE Asian Sultanate that includes Eastern Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Southern Thailand, and the Southern Islands of PI. It is all related, and if you would read the Newspapers or pay attention at your security briefings you would know this...

OK, so where do Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar fit into the JIs interests? No security briefing I've been to ever linked those countries to Islamic terrorism. BTW is it a fact that the same group is controlling all of these events, or is that a theory? No security briefing I've been to has mentioned the sultanate you described. I appluad your knowledge, but I don't think that's what the security levels were based on and what individual commanders gauged their go/no go decisons on either. The point I was trying to get at is when events like these occur people in the miltary, who are not intel experts, over react and put heavy restricitons on their personnel. It's decisons at unit levels and not a DoD wide ban, BTW. Key people dub themselves experts and ban all that is unfamiliar to them just in case. People were actually asking me to consider calling off my trip to Thailand last April becaue they were afraid of another Tsunami. Ridiculous. If they read the papers they would know that another earthquake of similar magnitude to the one that caused the tsunami occured and no tsunami resulted. If they finished the article, they would have learned that the tsuanmi was caused by an avalanche with remote chances of repeating. Finally if they knew where the hell Bangkok is, then they would understand that a 30 foot wave in the Indian ocean cannot reach Bangkok. But they don't do these things. They think like this: tsunami struck Thailand = Thailand dangerous. Bali in SE Asia = SE Asia dangerous. Elementary school logic. And this mentality seems to be limited to Asian countries. A co worker of mine went to London in August and wasn't required to attend any security briefings. Barley a month after a major terrorist attack too (I read that in the paper). I think that sub consciously many people in the States and, therefore much of its military are petrified of the outside world, and the unfamiliar due to lack of exposure to it (ignorance) and their behavior is influenced by this fear. As you can tell it's getting old and making me cranky, nothing personal against you CS.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head - in many ways, the majority of the population in the US (including many representative leaders) are the equivalent of children -- including beliefs in angels and stuff. No surprise, thus, that most reactions to international incidents, or domestic problems, are knee jerk type.

Actually interestingly enough, after the 7/7 attacks in London there was a travel ban put on the US military to stop them entering London, although this was quickly removed once it became public knowledge. It's may be interesting to note that even if there was an attack every single week in London that was as deadly as the July attacks, you would still be more likely to be murdered in Washington DC than London.

yes it was removed rather quickly in the face of extreme ridicule by the british public who found it rather pathetic. The author would like to express that the above comments to not necessarily reflect his/her opinions.

Yes I'm familiar with the brief ban. My suspicion is that the Bristish governemnt requested it be dropped quickly because keeping an extended ban is like a "no confidence" vote to the Bristish authorities.

Yes of course, but it was also because of the rediculous hypocrisy involved.

Hello??? So the majority population in the US is Christian - in which SOME do actually believe in angels - AS DO SOME Christians in MAJOR portions of REST of the world, AS DO MOST Muslims in the REST of the world. AS DO WHOEVER in hell is left in the REST the world who, if they don't believe in angels, DO similarly IDOLIZE devils, rock singers, animal gods, and football stars. So now, was there a point, or just another tired knee jerk reaction to international incidents, domestic problems, and to the majority of the population in the US?
