Even my Thai in-laws knew who he was. Big even on Thai TV.
THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead. He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said.
It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.
He was 44.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the incident happened.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.
It is understood Mr Irwin was killed around midday, Eastern Australian time

Oh this is terrible news.He was a great guy and so entertaining.
I just loved his passion for life and animals.He will be greatly missed.My condolences to his family.

Steve Irwin was reckless, and his tragic fate is not entirely a surprise. Not too long ago he was hand-feeding a crocodile (not behind a fence) while at the same time holding his infant child in his other arm. He has done a lot of other crazy things also.
Reminds me of Timothy Treadwell who thought he could live among the grizzly bears in Alaska until one suddenly attacked him and his girlfriend, and then ate them both in 2003.
These "animal lovers" can get away with irresponsible behavior for awhile, but eventually the odds catch up with them.

Sad to see anyone die, particularly if they leave behind a young family....
Not sure Mr Alan is suggesting he deserved it, but if you play high risk odds all of your life, then the chances are it will catch up with you.
Personally I didn't like his shows - he irritated me no end - and personally it doesn't surprise me that his life was brought to an end in this way. I guess it won't be a surprise to his widow either.
None of this stops me feeling sorry for the guy, sensing a loss, and particularly feeling sympathy for his poor family.
