Not sure if this has been covered before. Anyone have a work around for this issue? Thailand tightens visa rules for tourists to cut illegal workers (AFP) 10 September 2006 BANGKOK - Thailand will tighten entry regulations for tourists in a bid to crack down on illegal foreign workers, the Immigration Bureau said on Sunday. The move, which takes effect October 1, would affect tourists from 41 countries including Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the United States, said Suwat Thamrongsrisakul, the head of the bureau. Currently, tourists from 41 countries can enter Thailand without visas and stay in the kingdom for up to 30 days. They can extend their stay by checking out of the country, mainly by crossing the borders of neighboring Cambodia and Laos, and returning with new entry stamps. ‘Under the current rules, people from those countries can stay in Thailand as long as they want. Some even stay here for one year,’ another bureau official said. The bureau had learned that a growing number of foreigners from the 41 countries worked illegally in Thailand, Suwat said, adding many were employed in bars and restaurants in the popular seaside resort of Pattaya, east of Bangkok. ‘Tourists are taking advantage of the visa exemption law. Instead of sightseeing, they are doing business here,’ Suwat said. From October, tourists from the designated countries can still enter Thailand without visas and stay for up to 30 days, but their entry stamps will be renewable twice at most for a maximum stay of 90 days. Tourists who stayed for 90 days must leave the kingdom for at least 90 days before being permitted to re-enter Thailand, Suwat said.

Doing business in Thailand? Right. So the gov't thinks it needs more of the pie. On another note, one for the kids... I wonder what they'll do. There goes half those schools in Thailand whose parents are paying extra to get their kids taught by foreigners. Very big business for even poorer government schools here. Sometimes the money coming in might even improve other things for the children; or the kids get a chance to interact with a foreigner and stop being so shy... even if all these guys aren't the best teachers around... Oh well, maybe the schools will just cancel all their classes every 3 months. Or give them back to the Thai teachers who can't speak. Maybe the qualified Fillipinos stock just went up... However, the chances of finding enough work-permit qualified teachers who want to work in Thailand, and for the schools to pay them enough to want to, is nil.

Tourist visa, is that not for tourists? Where I think Thailand can improve is to allow them persons who have income from outside the kingdom to get 90 day visas if they can prove they have paid tax on it or prepared to pay tax to Thailand. Look at it another way, can a Thai get a VOA if they turn up at any of the 41 countries that who’s citizens have this privilege when visiting LOS. BB

Not an issue - if you care, you send your kids here: http://72.29.71.127/~lfibac/website/ If you don't, you take your chances. I have a feeling they are not affected by this. I also have a feeling their kids get an excellent education.
