For starters, there's no airconditioning at the new airport - but that's actually a good thing as the cooling is provided by a system of cold water running underneath the surface of the floors.

More details, here:

http://spluch.blogspot.com/2006/09/world-class-airport-with-no-air.html

This is actually VERY cool, and also potentially very environmentally friendly (well, as long as the water remains clean and germ free).

I'm sure there's other interesting innovations at the airport, and as more of us start using it, this would be a good thread to share these discoveries.

World class airport with no air-conditioning?

After a long construction period of 44 years, the Suvarnabhumi airport will start operating on 28th September 2006, replacing the 60 year old Don Muang airport. Some interesting facts of this fascinating airport are as follows:

Design architecture:

This airport costs 3.7 billion USD to construct, with a unique “camping tent” design. The 7-storey building has only one passenger hall and the first 2 levels are both underground. The airport has 2 parallel runways (60 m. wide, 4,000 m. and 3700 m. long) and 2 parallel taxiways to accommodate simultaneous departures and arrivals. It has a total of 120 parking bays (51 with contact gates and 69 remote gates) and 5 of these are capable of accommodating the Airbus A380 aircraft.

Airport with no air-conditioning:

Surprisingly, the Suvarnabhumi airport has no air-conditioning! However, it does use a green and environment friendly “co-generation plant” system – using cold water to flow through the ground for each and every floor and then directing the resulting cold air to above 2.5 km above the ground, hence keeping the air temperature 21-24?C. How innovative! But it may be difficult to maintain this temperature when a large number of passengers arrive at the airport in the near future.

Transportation System:

Suvarnabhumi airport is 25 km away from Bangkok city. In order to provide passengers with a faster router to the city, the Thailand government has plans to complete the construction of an underground train system that links to the city area within 1 and a half year period, will should only take one 15 minutes to travel from the airport to Bangkok’s city area.

Sounds good, but we'll see.

NicFrenchy, don't despair. If they do this right it will be like the HK airport train which has luggage racks next to the train doors that hold suitcases of all sizes and can be seen from any seat if you're paranoid about thieves.

And if they have elevators or escalators your problems are solved. If that's not convenient enough, well good luck to you.

EDIT IN: Are you carrying bowling balls in your suitcase?

I suppose it all depends on the airline. Lots of carriers in Asia and Europe limit you to 20kg total checked baggage on an economy ticket. Air Asia and other discount airlines are only 15kg checked baggage total. Of course you should check this out with your airline before hand.

That's actually a good question. What to do with an entire airport no longer being used. I can see domestic flights/military air base which generates beaucoup baht from foreign militaries. Who knows, Cobra Gold may move to BKK in the future.
