HERES AN ARTICLE GIVEN THE EVENTS A YEAR AGO - THAT THE STORYLINE ISNT OVER YET- The writers to Postbag of May 18 are stunned that a major political party, Pheu Thai, has unanimously elected a young and attractive but politically inexperienced lady, Yingluck Shinawatra, as its leader for the coming general election. If the party wins, she will likely end up as the next prime minister of Thailand. It cannot be argued that all members of Pheu Thai owe allegiance to Thaksin Shinawatra, even though he is criminally convicted and on the run. The only way Thaksin can avoid imprisonment when returning to Thailand is to have his party in command of a majority of seats in parliament and subsequently enact an amnesty law to free him from imprisonment. He naturally could have picked an experienced member to thrash the Democrat Party, but he cannot trust any members but his bloodline since he knows that once a man is in power he is likely to forget Thaksin's agenda. But, with his youngest sister, his doubts about her loyalty to his personal cause are non-existent. In addition, the vivacious personality of Miss Yingluck with no tainted record in politics _ since she was intentionally left out from the previous political loop of Thaksin _ could soften a lot of the electorate's hearts when compared with the old faces and their old tricks. It is also well-known in business circles that she is unpretentious and sincere in dealing with people. If I were Abhisit Vejjajiva, I would not underestimate her potential, irrespective of her being a greenhorn in politics. Yes, this is the final master stroke and the last battle of Thaksin in trying to kill two birds with one stone.

Talking to the wife all her family and those they know voted for her as they link all the price increases that have occured in the past years to the democrats, world recession is something I could not make her understand. Anyway thatsin was very clever like that giving poor people something to get on side at the same time f***ing everyone. As always everything same same but different corruption continues as always. Why has he not got the balls to come home and take his sentence bloody hypocrite. He can kill and murder and make a mint but only normal thai shall go monkey house, not he who is above the law but live in dubai. He is a criminal pure and simple and should be treated as such. Also a murderer but managed to wiggle out of that like most do all over the world due to $$$$$.

... we witness again (for the 5th time) the election of a Thaksin-led government... the expectations are that the ruling elite will now use misshaped Election Commission rules and the corrupt judiciary the find fault in the election or the Pheu Thai candidates to void their win. ... any such attempt would surely de-legitimize them in the eyes of the world... but, I suspect Thailand's entitled aristocracy will care little more about how the world views them, than the Arab tribes controlling the Middle East... the Thai elites are themselves a sort of synthesized tribe, inbred for the purpose of continuing control... they operate in very tribal ways. ... so, the question now is: will the entitled elites and (more importantly) the Army generals, allow the election to stand? ... maybe... if the Army generals accept the end of aristocratic control and submit to control by the newly rich Thai-Chinese families, we might be witnessing a milestone in Thai governance... a shift from corrupt aristocratic-monarchal control to corrupt Russian-style oligrachy... a clepocracy. ... given the Thai Army's history, I sort of doubt they will stay in barracks... they will be under great pressure by monarchists to get them back the control... although, for a big enough share of the corruption, Thaksin might buy them off... there could thereafter be no talk of coups "to protect the King", as that flag will be permanently retired (notwithstanding a break within the ranks of the generals, which is too frightening to contemplate). ... get ready for Thaksin... he is again (de facto) Prime Minister... the returning conquering hero, the Simon Bolivar, or George Washington of his time... he will be unstoppable. ... these are interesting times in which we live here in Thailand.

I wouldn't be so sure of that - he hasn't set foot on Thai soil yet. I suspect things will remain calm until the current government tries to play that car. Elvis' health is another criteria in all of that, as I suspect all hell will break lose in the case of a reversal of fortunes.

Well as Farangs we can have our opinions. I'm up country Surin way a small province called Nang Mud about 20 mins drive from Prasat, any way it's about 50klms from Cambodia border up near the Casino. The wife voted yesterday like the rest of the Thai's, word on the street up hear if Ying Luck didn't get in there would be more bombing in our area from Cambodia, Wifey said the other day we should head back to Bangers but we all knew deep down who would win so we stayed. Most of the people wanted her to win up this way, as Taksins like him or hate him he does help the little people out that toil away day after day for 150 -200bht. Only the drug dealers don't want him around, sure he had many killed for being junkies, but hey there gone and one less mad strung out junkie wielding a machete at you for you money or watch. Yes the reds made a mess last time with there protests but people had enough, being a Falang back in Australia you get what about $200 a week on welfare plus extras if you have Children and that would be hard to live on, BUT these poor Thais do it tough in the Country and I can understand there point of view.
