http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/290765/thailand-bans-us-beefOK This is something that belong in the thread best steak in Bangkok, but I don' t have any new info about best steaks in Bangkok. But I do know that ICA supermarket http://www.ica.se/ have a promotion on US Beef here in Sweden maybe US beef producers dump meat on Swedish market ? Like The Irish meat market lobby did during The dioxin "scandal" incident ? Ehh I just cut and paste the Bangkok post for the future Thailand is suspending imports of beef from the United States following the discovery of mad cow disease in California, says Tritsadee Chaosuancharoen, director-general of the Department of Livestock Development Washington reported on Tuesday that a cow in California had been infected with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease. Imports of US beef have been temporarily halted until the department is assured that it is safe, Dr Tritsadee said on Friday. The suspension is in accordance with the Animal Epidemics Act, even though the imports of boneless beef cuts from animals under 30 months of age are not affected, she said. "Thailand is safe [from mad cow] and is not at risk definitely because the Livestock Development Department has measures to prevent and control the disease," she added. "We strictly inspect the quality and sources of foreign beef and closely monitor disease outbreaks in the country and overseas." Dr Tritsadee said Thailand would stop importing beef and lamb from countries hit by mad cow disease immediately. In 2011, the country imported 58,969 kilogrammes of boneless beef cuts from the US worth 29 million baht. In the first quarter of this year, the country imported 37,599kg worth 18 million baht. Indonesia was the first country to suspend imports of US beef yesterd

Up on the farm the cows we have...some 70 odds still. Are truely free range.... Their food comprises of grazing 6-7 hours a day...and a two hour walk ( there and back) The only chemicals used are to do with anti parasites as also used in countries world wide. Thai rice though is bombarded with chemicals from fertilisers to anti bug agents....that concerned me more. Especially the latter that addressed the bugs. One product I would not recommend is Thai pork. We turn over maybe just 100 pigs a year....but they are constantly washed in chemical sprays and fed a diet that includes parasite killing food. As for crops of fruits and potatoes...Thai life is indeed right. And why I know is I have a farm and have to approve payments for those agents.....I am naturally only concerned at profits the family make that not moral issues. By the way it's all legal. I would in this case support Thailands ban for now as its a serious concern. The hard reality is often the cows in Thailand live far more naturally. But in all honesty American cattle are superior. Just as there is little dispute Australian cattle is superior to US cattle. And worlds best is universally acknowledged to be New Zealand cattle. There is a degree of hypocrisy involved in Thailand banning products out of concern. But you will find this is a short term measure.

The best beef cattle are Japanese Kobi cattle, not NZ. NZ rates best for lamb, not beef. High grade American beef is far superior to Australian beef by a long shot......Unless you live there, and only eat crap burgers. American top grade beef is restricted in lots of countries because of protectionism. Cheap crap burger is imported because it isn't a threat to local low grade beef, but many countries restrict the import of high grade American beef. There is a restriction importing high grade Angus, or Charolais beef into Japan, and Herford is only allowed if it is grade "A", or lower, no grade "Choice, or Prime" beef is allowed into Japan to protect the Kobi market. This happens all over the world with regards to American beef. Not all American beef is crap feedlot hormone pumped grade "A" junk that feeds the crap burger market. With the business monopoly practices in Thailand it is no wonder NZ is a big supplier of beef in Thailand. The USA has strict laws against bribing officials to get contracts, or improve business standings so not a lot of American beef is allowed into Thailand anyway. There are no good steaks in Thailand, even the Kobi beef is suspect of not being real if you've tasted the real thing.

Agreed. U.S. beef tends to be shitty. But all the prime is reserved for the best steak houses. If you have ever hade a good steak in NY, Peter Lugars, Fel Friscos, BTL, etc., you will understand. But our supermarket steak tends to be of lower 'mass' production quality. DG forgot one thing..t he fish and shrimp.... The shrimp ponds are filthy, just as they are all over the world. The fish also come from ponds, and that water quality is ighly suspect. MY wifes father stole some water from a water truck to add into the fish ponds. What he didn't know was that water was already treated to be used on rice.... killed off everyhting in the pond.... then he drained it all out, re-filled it with normal water and then re-stocked it with fish. So a few months later everyone in the village was back eating the fish form the pond..... did the chemicals all go away? Nope., just to levels that didn't kill the fish. An you wonder why so many of these people are mentally retarded, including my wife.

... while living in Tokyo, I made quite a few trips into Miyazaki Prefecture, where I was introduced to Miyazaki beef... I know a lot of Japanese who would argue that Miyazaki is the best. ... for me, it was equally good... at that level of quality, I just don't know how you call one better.

Kobe, Miyazaki, Mishima, Matsusaka, Omi and Sanda beef from Japan are just area breeds of the Wagyu cattle. They are treated differently in each area in how they are raised, but are all the same cattle breed. Each one professes to be best, and all cost roughly the same at the retail level. There is a growing organic beef production going in the USA with Wagyu cattle, trying to improve the qualities that make it the top beef.

... DG... it's a good sized herd, 70 head... if you have the control to ranch at a high standard of quality, and you are interested, you might want to consider contracting for a farang food supplier who has done quite well here... http://www.donsfoods.com... very cool guy named Don Battle, with a great personal story. ... amongst a variety of enterprises, he also raises his own beef here, originally for his own restaurants, but now whole selling to international hotels in the resort markets... French-Thai raised locally... finished the last 60 days, or so on grain and something weird, like tapioca (I believe)... then custom slaughtered and dry-aged 21 days... never frozen. ... you'd be dealing with a farang in a market where local beef is not done well... he'd be dealing with a farang who is reliable and 'gets it'... Don produces I believe the best value steaks anywhere in Thailand. ... Don's a tough old bird, but a dead straight shooter... might be worth inquiring into.
